Justin Timberlake has been laying the groundwork for his upcoming studio album Everything I Thought It Was, due out March 15. The Grammy-winning singer returned last month with the honest single “Selfish,” and now he’s back with album’s latest single, “Drown.”

On “Drown,” Timberlake looks back regretfully on being wronged in a relationship and tries to figure out where things went south. He reflects on what could’ve been, but ultimately he decides he’s better off without the person who left him floundering. “You showed me exactly who you are and I should’ve believed it / You left me alone out in the dark with all of your demons / Got caught up in the tide of all the tears you cried / Yeah, you know I was blinded by my heart, sinking from the start,” he sings. “Should’vе never followed you this far, now I’m in thе deep end / And you let me drown / You didn’t even try to save me / You let me drown.”

When speaking with Apple Music about the musical content of the upcoming album, Timberlake revealed the LP will have a variety of different sounds.

“I think there are moments that are incredibly honest, but also, there’s a lot of f—king fun on this album,” he said. “I think that’s where I came up with the album title, with Everything I Thought It Was. I was playing it for people around me. They’re like, ‘Oh, this sounds like everything we know you for.’ And then another friend of mine was like, ‘Oh, this sounds like everything I thought I wanted from you.’ It was like that sort of phrase, in one way or another, was in the air. And I thought to myself about how some of the songs are more introspective and some of them are more what I think people know me for.”

After releasing the new project next month, Timberlake will embark on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour that will take him across North America through the end of this year. Everything I Thought It Was comes out March 15.
