Bon Jovi, The Moody Blues… Legends do not need a crown

One evening in April, Jon Bon Jovi, leader of the legendary Bon Jovi, said: “I’ve been writing this speech since I first learned how to use a broom and sing the stairs.”

After years of waiting, when even a pop star like Madonna was honored, Bon Jovi — the heroes of the 1980s — finally fulfilled their dream of inscribed their name in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.

To describe popular culture in the 1980s, perhaps it is only necessary to sum it up in a few things: bulky hair fashions, sparkly suits, sleek music that is sometimes great and sometimes bad.

And so, who better represents the 1980s than the long-haired Bon Jovi guys who wore showy outfits and knew how to make hard rock an easy-to-drink cocktail?

The legendary Howard Stern teased that, in its heyday, Bon Jovi severely destroyed the ozone layer with the Aqua Net hairspray they used.

It’s also just to show Bon Jovi’s immeasurable influence. Yet they had to wait a long time to be officially enshrined in rock history.

This may seem confusing, but if we look at The Moody Blues or Sister Rosetta Tharpe, monuments that also have to wait until 2018 to be honored, we have to come to the conclusion that tardiness is the working style of the Hall of Fame.

To imagine Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s position, know that without this black woman with great guitar fingers and reckless voice, it would not have been possible for Elvis Presley or Bob Dylan to play music in such an arrogant way.

And when it comes to listing pioneering artists who elevated rock from music for young adults to true artistic levels, The Moody Blues is certainly an indispensable name.

Ignoring myths, unobjective reviews, and rumors of accepting bribes have caused the Hall of Fame to lose more or less credibility. The Velvet Underground drummer even instead of calling it a Hall of Fame, sarcastically called it a Hall of Lame.

On the other hand, though, giants like Nina Simone, Sister Rosetta Tharpe or Bon Jovi probably don’t need a ritual or title to prove they are immortal.

And what the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame does each year isn’t just select a few individuals to celebrate. Sometimes, it’s simply a place where people reminisce about the golden years of music.

Ne me quitte pas, I put a spell on you by Nina Simone

On that tribute night, when seeing so many contemporary artists sing Nina Simone’s Ne me quitte pas, I put a spell on you again, seeing Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora reunite on stage to perform Living on a prayer, and hearing Richie talk about Jon with so much deep love, what audience isn’t satisfied?

The tribute may have come belatedly, but it was belatedly worth looking forward to.
