Jon Bon Jovi recently opened up about his unexpected journey of healing after a crucial vocal surgery that could have jeopardized his singing career. Before the procedure, he consulted Shania Twain, who had previously gone through the same surgery with the same doctors. Twain’s words of encouragement, however, might have been a little optimistic.

“Not only did she reassure me that it would be OK, but I think she also pulled my leg a little bit because she told me I’d be out there a lot sooner than I have been,” Bon Jovi shares in his new documentary Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. He recalls Twain admitting, “She says, ‘Well, I told you that because I knew that you might back out otherwise.’ And so, I couldn’t wait to get the operation.”

The Road To Recovery Of Jon Bon Jovi’s Vocal Surgery

In June 2022, Bon Jovi went into surgery to fix his vocal cords, which were affecting the quality of his voice. Despite Twain’s slight stretch of the truth, Bon Jovi thinks of her fondly, calling her his “spirit sister.” He states, “She was the ‘only other one I’ve known that’s ever had this surgery, with this doctor, and the only reason I found that out is because she reported it in the press.”

Since his surgery, Bon Jovi has taken a pause from touring to focus on getting better. The journey has been full of ups and downs. “Every day is the recovery process,” he explained. It’s not easy, as he’s working towards being able to perform his typical shows – powerful performances lasting two and a half hours several nights a week. “I’m capable of singing. What I’m not necessarily capable of is two and a half hours a night, four nights a week, but I’m aspiring to get that back,” he says, with determination to regain his full stage prowess.

The Struggle And Hope Of Jon Bon Jovi

In the documentary Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, viewers witness the stark reality of his condition, where at one point, he struggles to sing. He reassures his audience that those difficult moments, some filmed as far back as two years ago, are behind him. Speaking to People, Bon Jovi confirms his progress: “What you saw on film was shot last March in that scene when I couldn’t sing well, or two years ago when I was on the road,” he says. He continues, “I’m well into the recovery [now]. Not a day of it’s easy. Every day is a struggle, but I’m more than capable of doing it again.”

His resolve is clear. Every day Bon Jovi faces challenges, but his commitment to bring his music back to the stage is unwavering. Even though the road to full recovery is slow and filled with daily hard work, Bon Jovi holds onto the hope of returning to his fans and performing with the same energy and passion they’ve come to love.
