Jon Bon Jovi Says He’s Done If He Can’t Go Back To Singing
According to an honest disclosure, Jon Bon Jovi is unsure if he would play live again and would rather leave the stage entirely if he is unable to give his all.
The iconic ’80s rock star recently discussed the state of his vocals in an interview with The Sunday Times, acknowledging, “If the singing is not great, if I can’t be the guy I once was… then I’m done.” He added, with a sense of acceptance, “And I’m good with that.”
Jon Bon Jovi underwent surgery on his vocal cords in 2022, leaving him unsure about the possibility of touring again. The procedure, known as medialization, was necessary due to atrophy in one of his vocal cords.
Reflecting on the disparity between studio recording and live performances, Bon Jovi emphasized the rigorous demands of touring. He explained:
“We have just recorded a new album. I sing in vocal therapy every day. But I want to perform for two and a half hours a night, four nights a week – and I know how good I can be.
“So if I can’t be that guy… put it this way, I don’t ever need to be the fat Elvis.”
The band’s upcoming album, Forever, slated for release on June 7, 2024, marks a thematic shift towards joy, a departure from the somber tones of their previous album, 2020. Bon Jovi described the creative process behind ‘Forever’ as a journey through “dark misery” to ultimately find joy.
A four-part documentary series called Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story will be premiered by the band in addition to their musical pursuits. With an April 26 premiere date on HULU in the US and Disney+ in the UK, the series promises to provide an intimate look into the band’s development, highlighting the successes and setbacks that have molded their path.
Jon Bon Jovi hopes to give fans a glimpse into the band’s true nature with these next albums, embracing both their strengths and weaknesses. His unfailing dedication to honesty underscores the deep connection between artist and audience that has defined his remarkable career, even as he mulls retirement from live performances.
