Oz Winery in Wamego, Kansas has collaborated with the New York City Broadway production, The Wiz, the enchanted tale of The Wizard of Oz.

General manager of the winery, Kristen Philip says, “This February, we started getting some phone calls from a company that was talking about a big opportunity.”

The production company asked to feature its renowned bottle “Drunken Munchkin” as the exclusive red wine option for theatergoers.

“It all happened very quickly. That was in February and the soft-open of the show was the last weekend in March,” Philip said. “We shipped a pallet at a time, which is 56 cases.”

Since opening night, the winery has seen an uptick in sales.

“On the past handful of website orders that have come through here in April, there has been a ‘Drunken Munchkin’ included in most of them.”

The wine, a lightly oaked Cabernet Sauvignon, is one of over 10 unique labels the winery sells. Philip hopes theatergoers experience a taste of Kansas with every sip.

“To know that you are then targeted with a particular group of people that have the love of theater, and they have the love of Oz,” Philip said. “It’s pretty exciting to know you can grab a customer base like that.”

Philip plans to see the show in August.

Tickets for The Wiz are available now through the end of July, with the potential to extend to the holidays.
