Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson called out a reporter on X, formerly Twitter, for ‘toxic, false clickbait’ and spreading ‘bulls***’ after he was given a negative reaction at WWE‘s WrestleMania press conference last week in Las Vegas.
The reporter, Nick Sortor, spread a message that Johnson was allegedly being booed for not delivering on a promise to help victims of recent wildfires in Hawaii. Sortor also claimed the crowd chanted ‘Maui! Maui Maui!’ last Thursday.
Johnson’s appearance in Las Vegas had nothing to do with the Maui wildfires. He was booed by the T-Mobile Arena crowd, but that was the hoped-for reaction from WWE’s leadership.
The Rock’s recent return to WWE’s sports-entertainment programming is as a heel, or the professional wrestling term for the storyline villain. Garnering boos and a negative reaction from the crowd is a huge part of being a heel.
The chants Sortor claimed were the word ‘Maui’ were actually ‘Cody’ as the crowd was cheering for Cody Rhodes, the face, or in-canon hero, in opposition of Johnson.
Johnson is a legendary professional wrestler who uses ‘The Rock’ as his in-ring name
‘I typically refrain from responding to toxic, false clickbait garbage like this because I hate dignifying bulls*** with a response, but when you use Hawaii’s tragic events to draw attention to yourself I won’t stay quiet.,’ Johnson said on X.
‘Nick, instead of posting bullshit like this that you know is false – I encourage you to post something positive for Hawaii, for our Polynesian American people. Or actually take positive action and come to Hawaii to help out in an uplifting way,’ Johnson continued.
Johnson also claims one of his charities has raised more than $50million for victims of the Maui wildfires.
Sortor’s original post on X was tagged with an ‘added context’ box, typically given to posts trying to deceive the public. Sortor responded to Johnon’s claims n Monday.
‘Obviously the claim made in this post has been disputed by the Rock himself, which seems to have some validity,’ Sortor said. ‘I’m leaving this post up simply to provide context to the ongoing dispute between the two of us regarding funding for Maui.’
Rhodes and Johnson were on stage together last week to help promote WrestleMania 40, which takes place over two nights in April.
Rhodes, the son of legendary professional wrestler Dusty Rhodes, is currently WWE’s most popular face and will headline his second-straight WrestleMania, the company’s biggest annual show, in under two months.
The Rock, who retired from WWE as a full-time performer in 2004, now makes sporadic appearances when his Hollywood schedule allows and storylines are intriguing enough for him to donate the necessary time inside the squared circle.
Johnson’s storyline rivalry with Rhodes is The Rock’s first time being a heel in over two decades.
Some users on X have responded to Sortor, claiming he only posted about The Rock to try and get more views on his page. Others believe Sortor posted the claim knowing he was intentionally lying to his followers.
The Rock’s post responding to Sortor has more than 26million views.
