After watching a production of Mamma Mia!, Miley Cyrus reportedly decided that she wanted to be an actress. She was eventually cast in the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana.
Cyrus gained global fame due to her appearance in the Disney Channel sitcom and toured the world in support of the show.
She released two full-length albums called Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and Breakout which were commercially successful.
She then began working on an EP for her clothing line with Max Azria called The Time of Our Lives.

The lead single from the EP was Party in the U.S.A. Originally intended to be part of singer Jessie J’s debut album Who You Are, the song was given to Cyrus after Jessie J felt that it did not fit in with the rest of her sound in the album.
Party in the U.S.A. is still the most successful song in Miley Cyrus’ career. The song charted at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum twelve times.
The song sold six million copies in the USA alone and received a RIAA Diamond certification in 2020. The actress/singer has performed the song on multiple tours.

The pop star, however, has stated multiple times that she hates the song.
She said that she only chose it to support her clothing line with Max Azria and that she needed more songs to fill her EP.
Moreover, the Hannah Montana star mentioned that she was not a fan of pop music and that she does not listen to pop songs.
Hence, she does not know what the lyric, ‘and the Jay-Z song was on’ meant in her hit single.
The song was written by Jessie J and Dr. Luke when they were working on the former’s debut album. She said to Miley World,
“I honestly picked that song because I needed something to go with my clothing line. I did not even expect it to be popular. It was just something that I wanted to do and it turned out for the best. It was really unexpected…I don’t listen to pop music and it’s not even my style.”
Cyrus’ statement about her own song is the least controversial thing to have happened to the song.
The pop star once came under fire for performing the song on the Teen Choice Awards wearing a tube top and dancing on a pole which was deemed inappropriate by many parents since Cyrus was still playing Hannah Montana at the time.
