Ice Cube’s real-life son portrays him in ‘Straight Outta Compton’ — but securing the role wasn’t easy during the two-year audition process

O’Shea Jackson Jr., aged 24, has garnered praise for his portrayal of Ice Cube in the acclaimed N.W.A. biopic “Straight Outta Compton.”

Though he shares a bloodline with N.W.A. member Ice Cube (real nаme O’Shea Jackson), Jackson had to undergo a rigorous two-year audition process, involving multiple auditions and working with three different acting coaches, to earn the role.

“It’s all these things to build confidence within me,” Jackson explained about the demanding process to Entertainment Weekly.

While Cube supported his son’s journey, as a producer on the film, he emphasized the importance of casting the best actor for the role, even if it meant overlooking his own kin.

“If we found a better Cube, then we had to go with the best man for the job,” Cube stated to People magazine. “That’s how acting and movie shoots work. So I couldn’t give it to him — and I wouldn’t if I could because that’s easy.”

Competing against actors and rappers, Jackson found himself among the final contenders for the role. However, the deciding factor wasn’t merely resemblance or vocal tone, but rather, rapping ability.

Actors portraying N.W.A. members had to convincingly perform the group’s iconic songs without dubbing. Jackson’s skill on the mic ultimately clinched him the role.

Jackson’s portrayal of his father received widespread acclaim, with many praising his ability to capture Cube’s essence. His performance has been lauded for providing the film with authenticity and depth.

After witnessing the final cut, Cube expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishment, noting the powerful impact of his performance.

“As a parent, you always are proud of the moments when your kid steps up,” Cube remarked to Tribune News. “So I’m forever grateful that he stepped up to this challenge and portrayed me in the movie. I couldn’t picture anyone else doing it.”

O’Shea Jackson Jr. is one of Ice Cube’s four children with Kimberly Woodruff, his wife of 23 years.

Since its release, “Straight Outta Compton” has enjoyed significant box office success, grossing $67.7 million.
