Is Taylor Swift’s Upcoming Album ‘Tortured Poets Department’ A Dig At Ex-Boyfriend Joe Alwyn’s “Only Men” Group Chat?

The Grammys night was a big one for Taylor Swift as the pop sensation won her 13th Grammy and also announced her new album ‘The Tortured Poets Department‘. Though it’s not a surprise that her announcement soon dominated social media and the news alike, it’s a speculation about the inspiration for her album that is raising eyebrows.

Taylor Swift’s fans are buzzing with speculation that her upcoming album has a reference to her ex Joe Alwyn’s group chat with his friends Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. Though the name of the album may not have rang any bell with the common masses, Swifties were quick to point out the similarities between her album name and Joe’s group chat, named ‘The Tortured Mens Club’.

The speculation has caused excitement among fans with some eager to see what Taylor Swift’s upcoming album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ will bring to the table, while some others surprised at her genius. Social media is buzzing with comments about the same since Taylor announced her upcoming album as she received her 13th Grammy Award on Sunday.

One fan on X wrote, “apparently, joe and paul mescal’s whatsapp gc was called ‘the tortured mens club’ LMFAOOOOOOOOOOO.”

Another one showed enthusiasm for the potential secrets Swift might spill about her time with Alwyn. “I’m actually so obsessed with the concept of this album already… ‘All’s fair in love and poetry’ is giving ‘you treated me the way you did and it’s fair game for me to write about it,’” the fan wrote.

Taylor Swift is famous for basing her songs on her experiences with her ex-boyfriends. The speculation has therefore gained more traction, compelling fans to ponder over the new way she has found to keep her signature tradition going.

During her acceptance speech for the Grammy award for Best Pop Vocal Album for ‘Midnights’, Swift revealed that she had been keeping details about her upcoming LP under wraps for two years. This was the same time when she broke up with Alwyn.

Alwyn had told Variety during an interview in 2022, that he and Mescal share a boys-only group chat called “The Tortured Man Club” started by ‘Fleabag‘ actor Andrew Scott. “[Scott is] just on it every day. He’s just on it by himself,” Mescal said at the time, to which Alwyn quipped, “Just messaging himself good mornings.”

Swift and Alwyn dated for six years before they parted ways in the spring of 2023. However, Swift drawing inspiration from this group chat could just be a rumor as a source previously informed Page Six that the breakup “just ran its course” and wasn’t dramatic.

Since his breakup with Taylor Swift, Alwyn has not been romantically linked to anyone new. Swift has meanwhile moved on with NFL player Travis Kelce, confirming their relationship publicly in September 2023.

Taylor’s upcoming album ‘The Tortured Poets Department‘ is scheduled for release on April 19. The pop sensation meanwhile has a lot on her plate as she is now set to resume her Eras Tour, and simultaneously attend her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s game during the Superbowl finals.
