4 Avengers Stars Who Were Seriously Injured While Doing Their Own Stunts

Four Avengers actors who got hurt while performing a stunt for the franchise.

The MCU is a franchise that asks a lot from the actors who are a part of it. While it is true that they have to be extremely skilled as actors, one of the biggest aspects of this is the physical toll that many actors go through to play specific characters. This is no joke, as very frequently, they have to have extensive workout schedules, and diets, and do some extremely dangerous stunts. When it comes to the latter – injury is something that is very common.

From falling and breaking a bone to almost dying, there is a lot that can go wrong when an actor is doing a stunt. While stunt doubles do exist, they do not stop the actor from all of the stunt sequences, only the ones that are really dangerous. During the filming of the classic 2012 film, The Avengers, Jeremy Runner, sustained a very serious injury. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the director of this movie, Joss Whedon talked about how amazing this actor was at fight sequences.

“His fight work is wonderful: precise, heroic, and you seldom have to double him. But one day he just turned wrong and his whole body shut down … He was in enormous pain, and we had to shut that sequence down and shoot it a couple of weeks later.”

However, while filming one for this film, he ended up turning in the wrong manner which resulted in him getting seriously hurt. Chris Evans has been very vocal about disliking the physical requirements that came with playing the role of Captain America. This seemed to be especially true after the actor sustained a permanent injury on the set of Captain America: Civil War. During the shooting of the famous scene of him, trying to stop a helicopter with his bare hands, the actor ended up pulling something, as he told Entertainment Tonight.

“That was in the first week of filming. And I actually messed up my arm doing it, I really did,” Evans told, “It’s a fake helicopter, obviously, but it was drifting beyond the ability of control. I tweaked a little something. To this day, I’m still messed up.”

After filming was over, he knew something was up, and he can still feel it to this day.

Robert Downey Jr. While Filming Iron Man 3

During the filming of Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr, was required to do a stunt when he would jump from one platform to another with a cable attached to him which would help guide and soften the landing. Before actually doing the stunt he was asked if he wanted to rehearse it beforehand.

As Guy Pearce, who played the role of Aldrich Killian in the movie, told GQ, Downey stated, there was no need to rehearse the stunt and then jumped off the platform.

“Robert broke his ankle in the middle of that film, ’cause he had to do a stunt where he had to jump from one platform down to another platform and be on a cable,” the star remarked. “They wanted to rehearse it, and he said, ‘No, I don’t need to rehearse it,’ and he jumped, and the guy holding the cable wasn’t ready or something, and he landed hard.”
When he did this, the person who was holding the cable wasn’t prepared and the actor ended up landing very hard, breaking his ankle. Interestingly enough, this take of the scene made it into the film.
