During his relationship with Kim Kardashian, rapper Kanye West had the task of answering that exact question. And it turns out he knew just what to buy to give the reality TV star the perfect present.
Before their highly-publicised divorce, Kanye loved to shower Kim in lavish gifts and one of the best times of year for that was her birthday. The Flashing Lights hitmaker bought his former wife some incredible presents, including a surprise luxury trip and a hologram of her late father. As Kim celebrates her 43rd birthday today, we’ve taken a look back at the best birthday treats she was given by Kanye.

Kanye West splashed out $36,700 (£30,200) on a Panthère de Cartier bracelet for Kim Kardashian’s 32nd birthday back in 2012. The stunning piece of jewellery featured an 18K gold band in the shape of a panther.
Speaking about the gift in a video shared on social media, Kim said she was “obsessed” with the bracelet. “Here I am in Florence the night of my birthday, which is on October 21. And Kanye was giving me my birthday present. He got me that Cartier Panthère bracelet that I cherish and am obsessed with,” she explained.
On Valentine’s Day in 2013, Kim was surprised when Kanye bought her a matching gift. This time, he bought her a bracelet which featured a black silk band and a diamond-encrusted panther. The item retails for a massive $137,000 (£112,000).

Hermès Birkin is the brand of choice for many celebrities when it comes to their handbags, but Kim’s one has a special meaning behind it. In 2014, Kanye teamed up with their then-16-month-old daughter North West to come up with a design for Kim’s handbag.
The youngster covered a leather-trimmed canvas bag with bright paint and even left her handprint on the canvas. “I had thought it was this new artist who had painted this purse [but] it was my daughter,” Kim said.
Gushing over the piece of art to Us Weekly, she added: “It was amazing.” Without North’s drawing, the bag is worth $3,775 (£3,110) and we’re sure it’s only gone up in value.

Kim’s father Robert Kardashian sadly died in 2003 after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. He was just 59 years old.
The SKIMS founder had a very close relationship with her dad and Kanye decided to honour this for her 40th birthday. The rapper surprised Kim with a hologram message of Robert.
Kim shared a clip of the hologram on Twitter. It said: “You’re 40 and all grown up. You look beautiful, just like when you were a little girl. I watch over you and your sisters and brother and kids every day. I am so proud of the women that you’ve become, Kimberly, and all that you’ve accomplished, all of your hard work and all of the businesses you’ve built are incredible.
“But most impressive is your commitment to become a lawyer and carry on my legacy. You are the most, most, most amazing mother to your four beautiful children and they are perfect. Know that I am very proud of you and I’m always with you.”
The video ended with the hologram saying: “I love you Kimberly. Tell Kourtney, Khloe and Rob I love them and miss you all.” Alongside the clip, Kim said it was “the most thoughtful gift of a lifetime” and said it was a “special surprise from heaven”.
$1 million donation
Kanye West gave to charity on behalf of his wife
For Kim’s 39th birthday, she was gifted some “amazing bags” by Kanye, but her then-husband also decided to give back on her behalf. He donated $1million (£820,000) to four different prison reform organisations, something which is very close to Kim’s heart.
Sharing the news on Twitter, Kim said: “This makes my heart so happy!” A letter written by Kanye explained: “Certificate of donation in honor of Kim Kardashian West. A donation of $1million has been made in your name by Kanye, North, Saint, Chi and Psalm West to the following: Cut 50, Buried Alive Project, Equal Justice Initiative and Anti-Recidivism Coalition.
