Nicki Minaj – the most famous female rapper in the US-UK music industry lost a copyright dispute and had to pay 10 billion VND to her opponent.

Nicki Minaj recently lost a legal case over copyright. Specifically, Nicki Minaj was sued by singer and songwriter Tracy Chapman for illegally using her work and violating copyright in her album “Sorry” which contained the song “Baby can i hold you” in 1988.

According to THR, Nicki Minaj will have to pay 450,000 USD (about 10 billion VND) to Tracy. The magazine also reported that the negotiation documents related to the lawsuit have been accepted by both sides, and so will not have to go to court this year. Tracy Chapman first filed a lawsuit in 2018 after Nicki Minaj sent the song to male DJ and record producer Funkmaster Flex, leading to the song being leaked and then spreading on the internet.

THR reports that according to court documents, after the lawsuit, Nicki Minaj and the singer’s representatives tried to seek a license for the latter song and purchased a sample but were denied by Tracy Chapman’s side.

Minaj previously denied that the song “Baby can i hold you” from her album “Sorry” violates copyright. However, she later posted on Twitter about not getting Chapman’s approval to buy the sample.
