Will Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and More Stars Boycott Hangout Festival After Alabama A.B.O.R.T.I.O.N Bill?
With the current state of affairs in Alabama, the pressure is on for these performers to step up and voice their opinions or even boycott the event entirely.
Will some of the biggest names in music take a stand this weekend in Alabama?
Cardi B, Bebe Rexha, Travis Scott and more stars will be rolling through the state for the Hangout Music Festival just days after the Republican-controlled Alabama Senate and House approved a bill banning nearly all abortions, making it the most restrictive abortion law in the country. The bill follows similar legislature passed in Georgia last week.
Many celebrities have taken a stand on social media, protesting the restrictive legislation and sharing their personal stories.
TooFab has reached out to many of the musical acts coming through Gulf Shores beginning May 17 with Travis Scott, Khalid and The Lumineers set to headline the three-night event. Cardi B, Bebe Rexha, Hozier, Diplo and Vampire Weekend are among those set to perform throughout the weekend as well.
With the current state of affairs in Alabama, the pressure is on for these performers to step up and voice their opinions or even boycott the event entirely.
While Georgia women would be allowed to receive a legal abortion until a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically six weeks after conception, Alabama seeks to take it a step further. If passed, it would be illegal for women in Alabama to receive an abortion at any point after conception, regardless of incidents of rape or incest.
The bill is now heading to the desk of Republican Governor Kay Ivey, who has been publicly anti-abortion in the past.
Celebrities such as Busy Philipps, Jameela Jamil, and Milla Jovovich have been extremely vocal in condemning the law and even opened up about their own experience with abortions. The late-night host even launched the #youknowme movement on Twitter.
“Many people think they don’t know someone who has [had an abortion], but #youknowme,” Philipps tweeted after news broke Tuesday night.
Alyssa Milano is going as far as to call for a full-on “sex strike” following the two southern states’ “heartbeat bills.”
Following Georgia’s legislature, many Hollywood stars, showrunners, and filmmakers launched a boycott of the state.
There are numerous incentives for studios to film in the southern state in the form of tax breaks. Because of this, major moneymakers such as “Avengers: Endgame,” “Stranger Things,” and “The Walking Dead” have chosen Georgia as their filming location in recent years.
This boycott would certainly impact Georgia’s economy.
