While Miley Cyrus fans are looking forward to a supposed volume 2 of the album “Endless Summer Vacation” (2023), a new compilation of random tracks from the singer has been making noise on social media in recent days. Behind an alter ego named Clara Pierce , a total of 12 songs discarded from the artist’s other projects were cataloged on Spotify , puncturing the pop star’s fandom bubble and giving rise to countless theories . POPline went after this story and discovered some curious facts .

Willian Cordeiro , 24 years old, is the person behind the profile (which was previously verified) of Clara Pierce. A resident of the municipality of Mutum-MG, the young man is reportedly a fan of Miley and has been following her steps since 2007 , when the star was still playing the children’s character Hannah Montana .

He, like a significant number of fans of pop artists, loves an ‘unreleased’ track , that is, one that was discarded from a project and was not made public (not officially, at least).

He told POPline that, before the buzz that took over social media this week, including internationally, he had already managed to upload one of the artist’s songs to digital platforms in 2021 , and another in 2022 . However, there were no repercussions. Until last March 10th , the same date that Miley released her most recent studio album, Willian released a compilation of discarded tracks, which he called “Down With Me” .

According to the young man, these are songs that Miley had worked on between 2013 and 2017 . Although they were never officially revealed to the world, the smilers (as her fans are called) were already aware of the majority. “Hands of Time”, “Saggitarius”, “Can’t Live Forever”, “I Don’t Wanna Let It Go”, “Right Hand Man” and “At Least I Can Say That I Tried” are some of them.

“It was only me who listened to it, I put it there [on Spotify] just for me, you know? So you don’t have to listen online, so you don’t have to download and go to other applications on your cell phone. Everything was supposed to be on Spotify”, explained Willian , regarding his motivation to ‘upload’ the tracks on the platform. He also says that as he had already ‘uploaded’ two singles previously, he thought it would be possible to make a complete album available.
In the specifications of the songs, which after all the repercussion that took over social networks were removed by the platform itself, Willian credited himself as the author since it was a requirement to appoint someone to this role in order to make the tracks available.

Already as a performer, he had the idea of creating an alter ego named Clara Pierce – “Clara” was the first name that came to mind, and “Pierce” is from “Katherine Pierce”, a character from the series “The Vampire Diaries ” , he explains. To give his alter ego a face , he threw a photo of himself into an Artificial Intelligence application , and updated his Spotify profile photo with the result he got.
“I don’t want to harm Miley. If she didn’t release these songs, it’s because perhaps she thought they were too personal for her”, he explains, revealing that he doesn’t intend to try to make the songs available on the platform again.

Regarding possible legal developments in the case, Willian reports that he “got lucky” when his songs were removed by the platform, and that he hopes not to become the target of a lawsuit. “I really hope it doesn’t [go to court]. If it does, I’m screwed” , he says, in a humorous tone.

How did Willian make the songs available on digital platforms like Spotify?

We asked Willian how he would have managed to upload these songs to digital platforms. According to him, through a tutorial on the internet, he reached the distributor ONErpm . The company is responsible for delivering this material to digital platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, among others).

In other words: to upload a song on Spotify, only through a distributor . However, Willian would have gotten the “verified” seal because he made an account on an internal platform called “Spotify for Artists”.

He guarantees that he did not receive any amount from the number of plays of these songs. But he also cannot say whether the distributor or any of the platforms profited from this material.

POPline contacted Spotify to find out how the verification process is carried out on the platform. In times of artificial intelligence, we also question what mechanisms are in place to make this process even safer and more truthful, as well as whether they received any monetary value in relation to the execution of the tracks. Finally, we asked what policies the platform adopted in similar cases.

And with the digital music distribution platform ONErpm , we requested a survey of the case that had repercussions – erroneously – in some international media outlets. However, by the time this article was written we had not received a response from both companies.

Theories that it was all part of Miley’s own launch strategy

Fans were so excited about the mystery surrounding Clara Pierce ‘s profile and its instant and incessant repercussion that they began to create various speculations. Many of the smilers associated the singer’s “disappearance” and the lack of promotion of the album “Endless Summer Vacation” to a possible “unusual and controversial” strategy that would place the star’s name at the top of the most talked about topics on social media while the terrain would warm up for an upcoming launch.

“I died laughing [at these theories]. When I saw that people were thinking that Clara Pierce was an alter ego of Miley Cyrus to release a song… Guys?! If Miley were to have an alter ego, she would definitely give it another name. I don’t think the name ‘Clara’ would even cross her mind. I thought it was absurd! They thought the songs were made by AI [Artificial Intelligence], which was an alter ego because the record company didn’t want to release it. No, Miley has 100% control of her career. If she wanted to release these songs, she would have released them. She is an artist who has always done what she wanted and there is no record company that can stop her”, said Willian , who referred to the singer of the smash hit “Flowers” as “the Cher of our generation” .

This Wednesday (26) , at the height of the buzz and after the tracks had been removed from Spotify, Willian took to Instagram to declare mourning for the “death” of his alter ego . “You are gone, but you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Clara. #JusticeForClaraPierce” , he wrote, joining in on the fun.
