Dell and Sonya Curry forced Curry to play basketball??
And the truth shocked many people..
How would you react if you knew your favorite point guard was forced into joining the league?
Much to everyone’s surprise, Stephen Curry might have gone through this stage.
Despite his height and overall build, he has proved to be one of the rare gems in the league.
The 2 x MVP arguably is a one-of-a-kind player who fearlessly normalized the impossibles of the sport.
Fans have witnessed the aggression and passion with which he plays on the court. However, that might be a forced decision upon him.
In the latest episode of the podcast, ‘Smartless’, the star player revealed the reason behind his joining the league.
What inspired Stephen Curry to join the NBA
During the conversation, Curry revealed a surprising fact about his father.
He stated that his dad, Dell Curry, played 16 seasons in the NBA. Following that, the host asked him the obvious question of whether his parents forced him to join basketball as a profession.
To which he replied both his father and his love for basketball were the reasons behind his choice.
He said, “It was a little bit of both it’s kind of forced upon you just by that’s all you’re in a gym all the time, following him and it’s you develop a love for it.”
Curry’s father was selected as the 15th overall pick by the Utah Jazz in 1986.
Later, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. After 16 long illustrious career in the league, he retired in 2002.
The 9x NBA All-Star was 13 years old during that time.
So, it must have almost been natural for him to watch his father play the sport and develop a love for it.
Apart from basketball, he also played football and golf.
Then finally in 2009, he was selected as the 7th overall pick by the Golden State Warriors. However, his father wasn’t happy about it.
Stephen Curry’s father was skeptical about his deal with the Warriors
There’s no questioning the perfect match that is Curry and the Warriors.
However, the player’s father initially had doubts about the deal. Instead, he wished for his son to be selected for the New York Knicks.
In an interview with the New York Times in 2014, the 59-year-old former shooting guard said, “The Warriors had some questionable characters on their team. The Knicks really needed a point guard, and we felt that Stephen would fit perfectly with a coach like Mike D’Antoni, playing that fast, up-and-down style.”
In spite of his initial worries, Curry’s time with the team has been legendary. After winning four titles with the Warriors, the 9x NBA All-Star is aiming for their fifth title.
