After whirlwind success with her Barbie hit ‘Dance the Night Away’, which was just nominated for a Grammy award, Dua Lipa is back with fresh music. With her latest single, ‘Houdini’, the British pop star sings of being hard to catch and coming and going like the famed illusionist. But though she’s currently loved up with boyfriend Romain Gavras, the songstress did admit to holding a few ‘icks’ when it comes to dating.

Speaking with Tony Fly and Simon for Hits 1 radio, Lipa shared the process of writing her new music. And while the lyrics seem to refer to a hard-to-get woman who refuses to be tied down, she explained what really inspired the lyrics.

“I think the whole idea of it is like Houdini in the sense of like, ‘Okay, there are too many red flags here, and I gotta dip’,” she said of the song’s meaning. “I have to see those red flags for what they are and not be like, ‘Oh actually, I’m sure it can change’ or whatever. No, no, no.”

We all have little red flags in romance—some easier to overcome than others—and Lipa’s are surprisingly relatable. When asked what turns her off, she revealed that the little things sound the alarm. “It could be anything from chewing and talking with your mouth open… I don’t know,” she said before answering that “little ankle socks” also don’t sit well with her.

A welcome alternative is simply a standard tube sock for the fashion-savvy singer.

“I just feel like a nice long sock is nice for everyone involved,” she said.

Luckily for her, Gavras, a French film director, boasts impeccable taste—not an ankle sock in sight. First pictured together in March of 2023 before going red carpet official in Cannes in May, Gavras and Lipa are reportedly getting quite serious, per an Us Weekly source. She previously dated Anward Hadid for two years before splitting up in 2021.
