Former NBA player Dell Curry had a high-profile divorce from Sonya Curry in 2021 after more than 30 years of marriage. But all wasn’t lost as the 59-year-old soon found love again and has been married for almost a year now. During an interview with the Charlotte Observer, Curry shared details about how he met his current wife Nicki and said his new marriage is “great.”
“I didn’t know what I was gonna do (after the divorce),” began Curry when asked about life now. “I thought about going to the West Coast. I’m like, ‘Nah, I’m not gonna follow my sons. I’m going to stick it out. Hang here.’ And then I had friends who introduced me to my wife now. I’d met her a couple of times. We talked on the phone for a month before I laid eyes on her. I’m like: ‘Oh, I like this girl, man. What’s going on here?’ I wasn’t going to get married again. But life is great right now. It couldn’t be better.”
Sonya filed for divorce in 2021 after 33 years as husband and wife. The Montessori school owner accused her now ex-husband of “marital misconduct.” He did the same, accusing his ex-wife of having an extramarital affair with another former athlete for years. Despite the messy split, Dell said he’s happy in his new situation.
“For me, I’m at a great place in my life. My home situation is sound. My kids and their families are doing great. They’re happy for me. I’m happy for them. So life’s good,” he concluded.
The former couple met at Virginia Tech university where Dell played basketball and the mother of three played volleyball. They got hitched in 1988 and had Steph, 35, the same year. Seth and Sydel Curry followed shortly after.
Sonya has been vocal about how difficult the breakup was during a visit to the Tamron Hall Show last year. She addressed how hard it was for their son and NBA champion Steph Curry. He openly spoke about it being “challenging” but attributed his calmness about it to his upbringing, which made Sonya proud.
“I know that this isn’t something easy for anybody. This is a hard thing. And to feel like you cause other people pain in any situation is difficult,” she said during the interview. “I was just happy and fulfilled to know that the parenting and all the love and the nurturing that we’ve poured into our children is coming out that way and he’s able to express that. [It] just made me so proud because now it’s like they’re giving to me everything I poured into them. It’s coming back to me full-fold and it’s such a blessing.”
