Jamie Carragher was critical of Dominik Szoboszlai as Liverpool beat Brighton 2-1, claiming the Reds needed more from the midfielder before he was involved in Mohamed Salah’s winner.

Szoboszlai has enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at Anfield following his big-money move from RB Leipzig over the summer. However, Carragher was not impressed by his first-half display against the Seagulls.

“They could do with a little bit more from Szoboszlai, Liverpool,” he said on commentary for Sky Sports. “Had a blistering start to his Liverpool career and then in and out with injuries.

“There’s real talent there but we’re at the stage of the season now where big performances really matter.” And shortly after Carragher’s comments, Szoboszlai went on to play a key role in the winning goal.

Having received the ball out wide, Szoboszlai fizzed a pass to Alexis Mac Allister, who then assisted Salah. “Mo Salah has took until the 65th minute to find his shooting boots, and what a relief it is to those people he’s saluting,” Carragher added.

“Again, this is all down to that man [Alexis] Mac Allister. He’s been the best player on the pitch by a mile. When the game’s been frantic, he’s been the man with the cool head. There’s two passes here from Virgil van Dijk and Szoboszlai with real pace, takes people out the game, then look at that class from Mo Salah.

“Simple five-yard you may think, but through a sea of bodies between him and the goal, finds Mo Salah, and he’s had enough chances – you couldn’t give him any more.” And Reds boss Jurgen Klopp branded Szoboszlai’s pass in the build-up to Salah’s goal “unbelievable”.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Klopp said: “That is an unbelievable ball [from Szoboszlai]. It is the creativity and the quality, seeing that. He sees Macca, his first touch is incredible and then he sees Mo.
“How wasteful we were at all the other moments it was good we had this genius football moment to finish the game off. Brighton have incredible quality. That is the measure I have for how good we were today because I really respect them.
