The late Queen’s last ever Buckingham Palace balcony appearance showed just how committed she was to her royal duties, according to royal experts.

Her Majesty stunned fans as she made a surprise decision to attend on the final day of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022, despite her feeling unwell. According to experts, Charles encouraged his mother to turn up to the event.

Broadcaster and historian Wesley Kerr shared how the monarch wanted to put on a good show for royal fans. He told Channel 5’s Secrets of the Royal Palaces: “She wanted us to see her as the Queen. Trooping had been quite difficult and she stayed in the palace for some hours after Trooping which surprised me on the day.”

The queen witnessed the phenomenal RAF fly-past on Thursday, June 2, but was unable to attend a thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral the following day due to her illness. Sadly, she couldn’t make the Epsom Derby or the Party at the Palace. Despite this, she still managed to be there in spirit as she filmed a sweet sketch with Paddington Bear.

Speaking about Charles’ relationship with his mother, the expert said: “It was only when Charles rang up from the royal box and said, mummy, you know, there’s vast numbers of people here, there’s a wonderful atmosphere, is there any chance that you could make it?” He continued: “Little did we know this was the last time we were ever to see her on that famous balcony. A huge moment.”

According to the book Our King by Robert Jobson, the Queen had arrangements in place for her to travel by helicopter from Windsor Castle to Buckingham Palace and for her to use a wheelchair. Royal writer Emily Andrews commented: “They didn’t know she was ill, they didn’t know she was suffering in pain and they didn’t understand why the Queen wasn’t there.”
