Prince Harry will be returning to the UK alone next week, with it confirmed Meghan Markle will not join her husband for the trip.

The Duke of Sussex will travel to London for a special celebration of the Invictus Games, but Meghan and their two children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet – will stay in America. Royal expert Hannah Furness believes Meghan’s decision to stay behind relates to security fears.

Harry has recently been locked in a legal battle against the Home Office over the loss of his UK police protection where he told the court his children can’t “feel at home” in the UK if it’s “not possible to keep them safe” there.

Speaking on an episode of A Right Royal Podcast, Hannah said: “There is quite a heavy narrative that Meghan and the children won’t be coming back until they can resolve this security issue to their liking. But [Harry] will certainly be coming and going.”

Harry recently took legal action over the February 2020 decision of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) that he should receive a different degree of taxpayer-funded protection when in the UK. Ravec’s decision came as a result of a change in Harry’s “status” after he stopped being a “full-time working member of the Royal Family”, a judge was told.

However, retired High Court judge Sir Peter Lane rejected Harry’s case. In another blow earlier this month, a judicial spokesperson said that Harry has lost his initial bid to appeal against the decision.

After months of speculation, it was revealed Meghan won’t be returning to the UK next week. Royal correspondent Chris Ship confirmed the news on X, formerly known as Twitter on Monday.

He said: “Additional confirmation this morning that Meghan will not be joining Harry for the Invictus Anniversary service at @StPaulsLondon in London. But the Duchess of Sussex will join the Duke for an Invictus-inspired visit to Nigeria immediately after Harry leaves the UK.”

The Sussexes will travel to Nigeria following Harry’s London visit. During their stay, Harry and Meghan are expected to take part in cultural activities and meet with service members and their families.
