Corrin played Diana in season four of ‘The Crown’ before passing the torch to Debicki for the final two seasons of the series
Diana, meet Diana.
The Crown’s two Princess Diana actors, Elizabeth Debicki and Emma Corrin, met for the first time on the red carpet for the series finale on Tuesday. The pair shared a hug as their worlds collided at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
Both wore shades of white, with Debicki flaunting a long sleeve, floor-length gown adorned with sequins. Corrin went for an edgier look with a suit jacket, bowtie and sheer skirt.
Debicki, 33, has been playing the late Princess of Wales on The Crown for the past two seasons, and she is the last Diana fans will see as the Netflix series comes to an end with season 6. She spoke to PEOPLE in November after part 1 of the last season, which is depicting Diana’s final months, premiered.
The first installment is told in four episodes and delves into the events surrounding Princess Diana’s tragic death in 1997 alongside love interest Dodi Fayed (played by Khalid Abdalla). Part 2 will be released on Dec. 14 with six additional episodes, focusing on the aftermath of the accident and the future of the monarchy.
“All of the scenes in the lead-up to the end of this season were in a cumulative way — very difficult,” she told PEOPLE exclusively. “We shot them over a number of weeks. I think shooting the sequences where the two characters are being really pursued by the paparazzi was just a really horrible experience. It’s very physical.”
She continued, “The feeling was almost like being underwater. You’re just kind in this swamp of noise, of harassment, of being pursued. As the actor playing the role, the character is just constantly focusing on where they’re trying to get to, but there’s just this accumulation of obstacles in the way of that, and that was a very kind of difficult, taxing thing to experience.”
Elizabeth Debicki on Queen Elizabeth’s Death and What Surprised Her Most About Princess Diana (Exclusive)
As PEOPLE previously confirmed, the impact of the car crash that resulted in Princess Diana’s death will not be shown in The Crown. Executive producers Andy Harries and Suzanne Mackie later stressed at the Edinburgh TV Festival that the scenes depicting the tragedy were approached in a mindful and sensitive way.
Corrin, 27, played Diana in season four of the hit series — before passing the baton to Debicki — and was nominated for and won a Golden Globe for their performance. Although they did not return to the series, they said it was an unforgettable experience.
“Working on The Crown was the most magical experience in no small part thanks to the incredible cast and crew that supported and helped guide me through, including my wonderful friend, Josh O’Connor who has so deservingly been recognized today as well,” Corrin said. “It has been a privilege to be part of The Crown family and to portray our version of Diana … ‘Well, You Know, By Being A Mad Tree.’ ”
Corrin later spoke at the 2020 virtual show as they accepted their award: “Thank you so much to Diana, you have taught me compassion and empathy far more than I could ever imagine.”
