Patrick Mahomes’ two touchdown passes to Travis Kelce on Sunday led to a monumental achievement as they surpassed Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski for playoff touchdowns by a quarterback and receiver duo.
The pair led the Kansas City Chiefs to a narrow, 27-24 win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC divisional playoffs and achieved the feat in the process.
Mahomes found Kelce wide open on a 22-yard connection in the second quarter to give Kansas City a 12-10 lead. The following period, they connected on a short pass before Kelce rushed the ball to the end zone from inside ten yards.
The second quarter play was their 15th postseason touchdown, levelling Brady and Gronkowski before surpassing them in the third. The incredible feat happening in a crucial game warranted praise from coach Andy Reid.
‘Patrick and Kelce, with the record that they broke there with Gronk and Tom,’ Reid said. ‘I mean, that was a great job there.’
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce got their 15th and 16th postseason touchdowns on Sunday
Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady’s 15 playoff touchdown connections have been surpassed
Kelce and Mahomes led the Chiefs in a close 27-24 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night
Kelce broke his seven-game scoring drought by gathering his 17th and 18th career playoff touchdowns. While comparisons with Gronkowski for the never-ending ‘greatest tight end’ debate continue, Kelce has a chance to overtake Hall of Famer Jerry Rice’s record of 22 touchdowns in the postseason.
On the other hand, Mahomes completed 17 of 23 passes for 215 yards and the two touchdown passes, coming up big in his first playoff game on the road.
The pair have more records to chase including Brady and Gronkowski’s four Super Bowl titles as teammates. However, Kelce and Mahomes are two wins away from getting their third.
They must first overcome the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens led by MVP candidate Lamar Jackson in the AFC championship game. A win over Baltimore will set them up on a Super Bowl meeting with either the Detroit Lions or the San Francisco 49ers.
Before defeating the Bills on Sunday, the Chiefs secured a 11-6 record to top the AFC West and took care of the Miami Dolphins with a 26-7 win in the wild card round.
