The Atlanta Falcons finally found their franchise quarterback in Kirk Cousins. They signed the veteran free agent for a four-year, $180 million deal, which has largely been met with positive reviews except for one individual. Cam Newton felt that the Falcons overpaid and could have gotten several other players in that price range.

While appearing on Shannon Sharpe‘s podcast ‘Club Shay Shay‘, Newton made his case about the Falcons massively overpaying for Cousins.

What the Falcons paid for Kirk Cousins, they could have gotten Cam Newton, Justin Fields, and Michael Vick for that price. I'm not saying that to shame Cousins; my take personally was, 'Cam's getting old; he ain't getting no younger; he was 32 at the time.

Cam Newton told Sharpe

Cam Newton’s response hinted that he was not happy with the Falcons’ decision to sign Kirk Cousins.

His rant did not end there. Rather, the former Carolina Panthers quarterback further argued that he was in a similar situation as Cousins, but unlike the 35-year-old, he did not receive the same opportunity. To put everything into context, he claimed to be overlooked by teams after suffering an injury.

So how am I supposed to feel? Because of the same questions and the same concerns that you had with me, obviously you don't overlook that. You see, you don't have those same concerns with him. And if you gave Cousins my resume, he probably would've gotten more money. But I'm tripping, I'm bitter, and I'm mad.

Newton added
This wasn’t the first time the Auburn graduate vented his discontent about the Cousins-Atlanta deal. Right after the Falcons announced the news, Newton took a cheeky dig at the former Minnesota Vikings QB on his ‘4th and One‘ podcast.

It is extremely alarming that he only had one playoff win in 12 years. He's coming off of an injury. It's definitely alarming to see.

Newton chimed in.

Does Newton over Cousins make sense?

On the surface, the 32-year-old’s statement made sense back then. Justin Fields was still available for pickup until the Pittsburgh Steelers swooped in to acquire him from the Chicago Bears. But if they were searching for a franchise quarterback, then why would they sign a signal caller who never achieved a.500 record?

As for Newton making a case for himself, it doesn’t make much sense. Yes, he is a year younger than Kirk Cousins but hasn’t played in the league since 2021. He can boast a Super Bowl appearance and earn the MVP title; however, his final few seasons were nothing to brag about.

After finishing his tenure with the Panthers, Newton joined the New England Patriots, who were looking for a Tom Brady replacement. The Patriots cut him after just one season in which he played 15 games, throwing 10 picks and touchdowns. He returned to Carolina but only appeared in five games, recording four TDs and five interceptions.
