The 2024 Super Bowl has officially left fans stunned. And it’s not because of Taylor Swift or the game itself, but the first look trailer we got of the upcoming Wicked adaptation, set to premiere later this year.

The trailer gives us our first glimpse of Jon M. Chu’s take on the iconic Broadway musical, starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Michelle Yeoh and Jonathan Bailey also star, but the trailer also gives us a sneaky glimpse at Bowen Yang and Jeff Goldblum’s roles.

“I’m not afraid,” Erivo’s Elphaba declares in the trailer. “It’s the Wizard who should be afraid of me.”

The trailer rightfully shocked fans of the original musical.

“MOVIE OF THE CENTURY ALREADY,” one fan said on X.

“This might be actually good especially visually holy crap,” another fan commented. “Just hope it doesn’t pull a Cats.”

Much like Cats, Chu’s adaptation of Wicked has big shoes to fill. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wicked is the second highest-grossing Broadway show of all time.

Other fans wrote that Erivo was “coming for that EGOT” after having won an Emmy, Tony and a Grammy Award for her performance in The Color Purple.

Many fans on X were especially impressed by Grande’s transformation into Glinda. “ARIANA LOOKS SO GOOD,” one fan wrote.

Chu personally praised Grande’s performance in a post on social media when Wicked finished filming last month, writing, “Will never forget my year with our Galinda. Can’t wait for you to meet her. Thank you @arianagrande for pouring your heart into Oz.”
