P.K. Subban ignites controversy over ‘Lizzo-sized lunch’ comment during NHL playoffs (d)

P.K. Subban appears to be in hot water after including Lizzo in his commentary Tuesday during the NHL playoffs, with some accusing the former defenseman of taking a shot at the singer’s weight.

When discussing Game 1 of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers’ second-round series, Subban — who retired from professional hockey in September — spoke about what Toronto can do to bounce back following their 4-2 loss to Florida.

“Maybe they need to pack a Lizzo-sized lunch,” Subban said during the ESPN broadcast. “They weren’t prepared in my opinion.”

Some fans expressed outrage over the remarks, responding to a tweet Tuesday evening from Subban, who explained “pack a lunch” means to “be ready to compete.”

“Lizzo sized lunch was inappropriate and unprofessional,” one Twitter user replied.

Another opined, “Your comment was super tacky and unnecessary.”

Others implored for Subban to “apologize” and “do better.”

It appears Subban has not yet addressed the controversy as of Wednesday.

The 33-year-old athlete joined ESPN as a hockey analyst last fall.

He signed a three-year deal with the network, according to the Associated Press.

“I had done some work last postseason and it was great. I enjoyed working with the producers and everybody,” Subban previously said.
