Sydney Sweeney’s poolside dressing down of Alexandra Daddario in The White Lotus was one of the memes of 2020, perfectly capturing the soul-destroying prospect of gen z revealing just how out of touch you are.

Fortunately, the pair’s reunion at the 25th annual GQ Men of the Year yesterday evening was considerably less awkward, with Daddario toasting Sweeney’s standout year of double Emmy nods.

Paying tribute to “an incredible talent”, fellow actor Daddario recounted memories of filming The White Lotus in Hawaii, including how Sweeney planned a BBQ for the cast, and the pair rescuing a dog on a road trip where they saw an especially mind-blowing waterfall.

Daddario said Sweeney was “so funny, so cool, so down to earth” when they met filming Mike White’s satire thriller, with the two actors remaining close ever since. “I’m so proud of her, she’s like a perfect package of everything and her work on Euphoria is incredible,” she added.

Joining her at the microphone Sweeney said, “I’m so grateful that I’m able to play characters that have resonated with so many people and I really hope I can continue to do so.”

Sweeney is currently shooting the Spider-Man spin-off starring Dakota Johnson, Madame Web. Though tight-lipped on who she’s playing lest the red MCU sniper dot shows up, Sweeney revealed in her cover interview that she’s drawn to taking on abrasive roles.

“I like finding characters who challenge the viewer,” Sweeney said. “I dyed my hair blonde and started dressing up for photoshoots and people thought that is who I am. I worked really hard to change that perception of myself, especially in high school.”

She’ll also be returning for the third installment of Euphoria, picking up where her character Cassie left after a dizzying fall from grace in season two earlier this year.

“I love the spiral that Cassie goes down,” Sweeney said of her role in the HBO show. “[The darker material] is the easiest for me. I can access my emotions easily, so that’s just kind of what happens”.

Not much, again, is known about the show’s third season, though she has some specific hopes for Cassie: “I think it would be fun to play into that power she learned she had.”

Elsewhere at the event, stars Andrew Garfield, Jack Harlow, Stormzy, Kit Connor and Joe Locke and Leah Williamson were honoured.
