According to Dave Anderson, former New York Times sports columnist, “The history of the Yankees is virtually the history of baseball.” Well, rightly so, all thanks to the New York Yankees‘ rich history and contribution to baseball in over a century of its existence.
With a deserving tag of the most successful team in MLB history and former stars who ruled over the world scene, it carries an aura that other teams still chase. However, it could not have been achieved without proper guidance from managers.
Although the game is played on the diamond, the directions do come from the dugout through the managers. They play a critical role in the team’s performance and success. The Yankees’ history also verifies this with a few names that outshine the rest. What are those? And where does the current manager, Aaron Boone, stand on the list? A look into the 27-time champions’ past may answer this.
How Many Managers Have the New York Yankees Had Since the Beginning?
It has been over a century since the New York Yankees first came into existence. The team started its journey from Baltimore, competing as the Orioles in 1901. However, it was short-lived. A move to New York in 1903 brought many changes, and the team was officially renamed the New York Yankees in 1913.
But given that it happened in the process, this history has stuck with it, and so does the manager’s name, who first managed the team, Hall of Famer John McGraw.
Even after 27 World Series rings and 40 American League pennants, it still marks the beginning of the list with 35 names in their history. There are some popular names out there. But who were the best?
The Best: New York Yankees’ Managers Who Curated the Glorious Past
The New York Yankees had seen everything since its inception. Yet, it is the achievements that resonate the most, echoing the names that played a crucial role in attaining success.
The famous five are Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel, Joe Torre, Billy Martin, and Miller Huggins. Notably, all these managers had astonishing success with the team, with HOF McCarthy coming at the top with a winning percentage of .627, 1,460 wins in 16 seasons.
He also won eight pennants and seven World Series titles, with four consecutive titles while managing the greatest baseball players, Lou Gehrig, Bill Dickey, and Joe DiMaggio.
McCarthy was followed by another HOF, Stengel. He coached the teams for ten Pennants and seven World Series titles ahead of Torre, who has four, Huggins, who has three, and Martins, who won it once.
Although decades have passed since these managers made it to the Yankees’ hearts, their names still echo with love. However, the same is not the case with all. Many failed to win the trust and continue to be on the negative side of the list.
The Worst: Managers Who Could Not Fulfill the Aspirations
Managing a world-class baseball team is a dream, but it comes with a responsibility to perform. Even though everyone desires to do well, sometimes they can not, hence the fallout.
This happened with few in the New York Yankees camp, with five names coming into the hated group, including Bucky Dent, a former pinstripes player. Although Dent managed the Yankees for a short stamp, he has one of the poor records with a winning percentage of 0.404.
Interestingly, his successor also could not perform well and is second on the list with the worst record as a Yanks manager, with a winning percentage of 0.436. However, these two are alone in this. Johnny Keane, Clyde King, and Bill Virdon accompany them with poor and short-lived manager tenure with the Yankees.
Given that the Yankees have not performed well in the last decade, should not the current manager make this list? If he does not, where does Aaron Boone stand on the Yankees’ all-time manager list?
Where Does Aaron Boone Stand in the New York Yankees’ Vast History?
Aaron Boone’s journey as a Yankees’ manager has been filled with all the hope and a few positives. Under him, the Yankees have not made it to the World Series. Also, the playoffs’ success has been below average, with 14 wins and 17 losses since he arrived ahead of the 2018 season.
However, he is still the trusted one. Even after the Bronx Bombers failed under him in 2023, the management has agreed to his return. The longtime manager would return for his seventh campaign in 2024. But why?
The Pinstripes have not won anything, but Boone’s record has been great. After 870 games in charge, he has 509 wins against 361 losses at a win percentage of above .500.
Under him, the winningest team in the MLB has notched up over 100 wins in two seasons. This makes a manager who has proved something. But if history is taken into the contest, where would he rank?
Of the eight Yankees managers to win 500 or more games, Boone ranks sixth with a winning percentage of .586. He achieved this feat last season and joined all the top managers, including Billy Martin, Miller Huggins, Casey Stengel, Joe Torre, and Joe McCarthy, earning him another accolade.
If this feat is considered, Boone falls among the best managers the Yankees ever had. But the only miss is the World Series title. And if he can change that, he will become a part of the glory. Can he do it next season? Only time can tell.
