Many believe that Henry Cavill took cues from James Bond for his character—the suave spy extraordinaire. But that’s not the case. Instead, he crafted Agent Argylle to fit with the movie’s tone.

Argylle stands out as a character on its own. Vaughn sought someone who’s capable of nailing both the dramatic and action-packed facets of the role. And The Witcher star effortlessly fits the bill.

Matthew Vaughn Revealed the Truth Behind Henry Cavill’s Striking Look

Matthew Vaughn “needed someone who could exude the essence of a James Bond-type character but with a twist.” in Argylle. He said that “whoever will play James Bond” he will “give him a flattop and a Nehru jacket.” Henry Cavill goes with the character’s appearance, which is currently making waves in the industry.

In an exclusive chat with Pinkvilla, Vaughn, reuniting with the DC star since their 2007 collaboration on Stardust, spilled the secrets behind Cavill’s controversial look in the upcoming thriller. The director said:

“I felt Henry could give me all the classic spy stuff. He can give me a wink; he can do all the things I want from a spy. Agent Argylle’s appearance is a bold, instantly iconic throwback to the ‘80s. I have had an enduring obsession with the styles of that era, including the likes of Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, and the era’s signature flattops. That’s why we decided to give Argylle one.”

Agent Argylle’s bold look brings back ’80s vibes inspired by iconic styles from that time. Vaughn intentionally chose flattop hairstyle to pay homage to the ’80s.

Before even reading the script, Matthew Vaughn convinced Cavill of the haircut idea. The Hollywood star recalled that the director asked him “to have a flattop,” adding, “I know it sounds crazy, and maybe it is, but I promise you it’ll work.” The Most Dashing Duke trusted him, saying (via Pinkvilla):

“He and I have a great shorthand; we’ve known each other for years and he always brings a sense of unique fun to anything he’s working on. He’s a good, straightforward communicator, and as an actor, that’s what I need. At the end of the day, it’s about trusting your director and leader, and Matthew is someone you can trust.”

After reading the movie’s script, the 40-year-old realized the story was unlike anything he had read before.
