Offset embroiled in dispute with his music label over ownership of his solo recordings

Offset is reportedly embroiled in a legal dispute with his label Quality Control Music as they battle it out over ownership of his solo recordings.

The Migos rapper, 31, is fighting over the solo recordings he created after January 15, 2021 despite Quality Control claiming they are the rightful owners of the music due to an agreement they had previously signed with Capitol Records, TMZ reported.

Offset had signed a contract with Quality Control, agreeing to produce solo records for them back in 2013.

However, in 2015, Quality Control inked another deal with Capitol Records which gave QC full ownership of any future records Offset made from 2018 to 2023.

The dispute is now in the courts and draws parallels to the controversy Taylor Swift found herself in when her masters were sold to Scooter Braun back in 2019.

Offset alleges he regained control of his solo work when he split from Quality Control in 2021 and hashed out a new deal with them. Under this new agreement, he allegedly regained control of the solo work he produced from January 2021 onward.

Now Quality Control is disputing it, insisting they still hold the rights to his solo music as a result of their 2015 deal with Capitol Records.

Offset denies this, and argues it is ridiculous, according to TMZ.

In Offset’s view, Quality Control gave up the rights to his music as a result of the deal they made with him in 2021.

Offset believes he has sole control of the solo masters he produced since inking that deal.

Swift has also endured a very public battle to own her music, which has led her to re-record her first six albums, including Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), 1989 (2014) and 2017’s Reputation.

The issue initially arose when Big Machine Records, which originally held the rights to the songwriter’s masters, was purchased by Scooter Braun.

Following the acquisition, the Blank Space hitmaker took to her Tumblr account and wrote a lengthy post denouncing the sale and expressed that she was not allowed to purchase her own masters unless she agreed to sign an updated contract.

She went on to allege that Braun and Big Machine’s CEO Scott Borchetta barred her from performing her older songs at the 47th Annual American Music Awards and from using them in her 2020 documentary, Miss Americana.

Many other musical artists, including Iggy Azalea and Halsey, publicly voiced their support for Swift, while several of the manager’s clients, such as Justin Bieber, took his side on the matter.

Braun eventually sold the masters, as well as other properties related to the You Belong With Me singer’s output, to Shamrock Holdings in October 2020 in a deal that was reportedly worth over $300 million.

The songstress later claimed that the mogul offered her a chance to bid on the masters, which she refused.

Swift went on to announce that she would be re-recording six of her old albums, with an updated version of Fearless, entitled Fearless (Taylor’s Version).

Outside of his music career, Offset has been married to Cardi B since 2017.

He has five children total, two of which he shares with Cardi B – daughter Kulture,  four, and son Wave, one.
