During her first performance at the National Stadium in Singapore on March 2nd, Taylor Swift shared with fans that returning to the Lion City for a concert held significant meaning for her. The American pop star disclosed that her mother, Andrea Swift, had spent much of her childhood here with her older sister.

“So, many times when we would come here on tour, my mom would take me past her old home and where she used to go to school. I’ve heard all about Singapore from her. To be here and perform a show like this in front of so many people is so generous and honoring to my family like you guys just did is really, really meaningful to me,” Taylor said.

Taylor Swift revealed this after performing the song “Marjorie” from the Evermore era. The 34-year-old singer shared that she wrote this song for her grandmother, Marjorie Finlay. Taylor was deeply moved when the audience collectively turned on the flashlight on their phones while she was performing “Marjorie.”

Taylor Swift talks about her special connection with Singapore

Taylor previously mentioned her connection to Singapore in an interview with The Straits Times in 2016. She revealed that her grandfather, who worked for a tech company, had to relocate to Singapore for work, so her mother grew up there. “My mom’s family moved around a lot because of my grandpa’s job,” Taylor said.

Taylor Swift will be performing for 6 nights at a stadium with a capacity of 55,000 seats in Singapore, marking the only stop in Southeast Asia for her Eras tour. According to some sources, the Singapore government is paying Taylor three million USD for each performance, in exchange for her not performing in any other Southeast Asian country.

Singapore’s Minister for Culture, Edwin Tong, recently confirmed that Taylor Swift received government support but stated that the amount was not as high as rumored. The minister worked with the tour promoter AEG Presents to invite Swift to perform in Singapore. Taylor’s 6 sold-out shows are predicted to make a significant contribution to the economy of the island nation.
