Don Lemon and longtime partner Tim Malone are officially married.

The former CNN anchor, 58, and his fiancé, 38, wed on Saturday, April 6, in New York City.

“I’m a last-minute person and most things I just don’t worry about,” Lemon told People days before the ceremony. “But this one I’m secretly worried about, but I’m letting Tim take the reins because he’s a good planner.”
Lemon added, “I’ll be writing questions for like the U.N. ambassador and he’ll be saying, ‘Oh, when are they going to put the buttons on our jackets?’ It’s an important question, but I’m just like, ‘Huh? What?’ So he has a million questions, but usually he gets it done without me even answering.”
The ceremony was held at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in midtown Manhattan and officiated by Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States ambassador to the United Nations.

“She’s a friend, and it means that much to us,” Lemon said of Thomas-Greenfield. In attendance at the wedding were about 140 guests.

The ceremony blended marriage traditions from Lemon and Malone’s respective cultures. Malone’s sisters led the guests in a traditional Irish blessing, while the couple also honored the symbolic tradition of jumping over a broom at the end of the ceremony, a nod to the recognition of marriages among enslaved people in the American South.

For their celebration, the couple reserved the entire bottom floor of Ralph Lauren’s Polo Bar in Manhattan, where they had their first date. Among the anticipated celebrity guests were Clive Davis, Joy Behar, Matt Laur, Darren Star, Tamron Hall, as well as Alec and Hilaria Baldwin.

Leading up to their wedding, Lemon and Malone shared glimpses of their pre-wedding festivities on Instagram, including a pre-wedding call from Vice President Kamala Harris, documented on Instagram Story. Lemon also posted a photo of three little tuxedos and harnesses for their three dogs, humorously noting that they were ready to join the celebration.

Coincidentally, April 6 marked Malone’s 40th birthday, for which he expressed gratitude for the love and well wishes from his followers on Instagram.

Reflecting on their wedding plans, Malone emphasized to People that having a large, traditional wedding was significant for both him and Lemon.

“We wanted to make a public statement and we wanted to involve our loved ones,” Malone explained. “We obviously could have easily gone to city hall. We could have used Covid as a perfect excuse to do something really quiet. But I think this is also a message. For I don’t know what percent of our guests, on both sides, but for a lot of them it’s going to be their first gay wedding.”

The couple’s relationship began in 2016, nearly a year after their initial meeting at Almond Restaurant in Bridgehampton, New York. Lemon announced their engagement in 2019 with a heartfelt Instagram post featuring a “Daddy Will You Marry Papa” dog collar, commemorating the proposal.

Reflecting on the proposal, Lemon described Malone as a “really great guy” and shared details of the emotional moment in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly in April 2019. He recalled Malone’s vulnerability during the proposal, expressing disbelief at first but ultimately accepting with joy.

Coming out as gay in his 2011 memoir Transparent, Lemon acknowledged that the engagement marked a significant milestone in his life. He confessed to Us that the engagement made their relationship feel even more real, prompting thoughts about marriage and starting a family. Lemon reflected on his journey, noting that he had never imagined his relationships would be public or that he would have the opportunity to legally marry. He considered himself a late bloomer in these aspects of life.

In April, CNN Tonight anchor Don Lemon announced his engagement to Tim Malone, 35, after Malone proposed during his birthday celebration.

Lemon, 53, took to Instagram at the time to share the heartwarming news, posting a photo of their dogs with matching bow tie-shaped tags that read: ‘Daddy will you marry Papa?’ alongside their engagement rings.

Reflecting on the proposal, Lemon wrote, ‘He gave me a present on his birthday. How could I say no?’

The couple had been together since 2016, with their relationship blossoming after meeting at a restaurant in New York City. They even shared an on-screen kiss during a live broadcast of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage in 2018.

Lemon had previously come out as gay in his 2011 book Transparent, where he discussed the importance of personal choice in deciding whether or not to come out publicly, stating, ‘I think it would be great if everybody could be out. But it’s such a personal choice.’

In a 2018 interview with Metrosource magazine, Lemon shared insights into how he and Malone crossed paths. He revealed that when they first met, Malone was in a relationship while Lemon was exploring his options in the dating scene. After Malone’s previous relationship ended, they transitioned from friends to partners, although they had known each other for about a year and a half before that.

Reflecting on his experiences with dating and relationships, Lemon expressed uncertainty about why people were interested in him. He pondered whether it was because of his personality, his profession, or the possibility of gaining fame through association with him. This uncertainty made dating challenging for Lemon, contributing to his prolonged period of being single. He attributed his focus on his career and a degree of distrust toward people’s intentions as factors that may have prolonged his single status.
