Latto has offered her thoughts on beef in Hip Hop — which, for better or for worse, is a staple of the culture.
On Monday (November 20), XXL published an interview with the Atlanta rapper. During the chat, Vanessa Satten asked her about the relationship between women in rap, and if competition trumps solidarity among them.
“I think it really don’t be a problem until we let fans, Stans, whatever you want to call them, like the outsiders once they get in the mix,” she replied. “I think that’s what stirs the pot. Because it’s like, we will all be fans of each other and commenting and following each other, whatever, but then once they get to comparing, they will turn us against each other, which is very weak-minded of us as female rappers.
“I will take that accountability. I don’t think truly, at heart, it’s us. Once people are infiltrating your mind and got you thinking this, and now you feel this type of way without even addressing the person, now you addressing fans. I think we be falling for these traps that they put on female rappers.”
Last month, Sexyy Red, Ice Spice and Latto found themselves at the center of a debate surrounding who re-popularized early ’00s fashion, marking the latest point of contention in the female rap world.
The drama began in late October when Sexyy reposted a fan comment on her Instagram Stories that read: “All these celebrities wasn’t wearing @truereligion until @sexyyred came out.”
Some believed that the St. Louis rapper was throwing shade at Latto, who shortly before had posted photos of her wearing True Religion jeans at 21 Savage‘s recent birthday party.
In Instagram Stories of her own, the “Big Energy” hitmaker dug up more photos of her wearing the brand back in the day while writing: “They be knowing what they doing lol very weird… If u not from Atlanta this not for u!”
After her apparent dig began circulating social media, Sexyy Red took to Twitter to set the record straight, writing: “Definitely not shading her I’m direct wit it whatever I gotta say.”
Hours later, Latto addressed the chatter herself, albeit in more subliminal fashion. She began by clarifying that her True Religion jeans were part of an outfit for an “Atlanta throwback-themed birthday party.”
She then hit back at a Twitter user who called her “crazy” for “trying to prove that [she] was wearing True,” replying: “No what’s crazy is y’all accuse me of copying any and every thing and when I prove y’all wrong I’m doing tewww muchhhh.”
In response to someone else who branded her a “ditzy ho” for “thinking everything is about [her],” she wrote: “Yall hoes def not fast… I was addressing Shaderoom comments under a post of ME fuck is u talm bout dizzy bitch if u gone be messy at least KEEP UP.”
