Former Iowa CB Cooper DeJean says NFL teams wanted to know if he thinks he could beat Caitlin Clark so he told them his truth.
Cooper DeJean, the former Iowa cornerback and one of the top-rated prospects in this year’s NFL Draft, said that he was asked by NFL teams on numerous occasions during the combine if he could beat Clark, and he responded, “I said that I think I could win,” DeJean said Tuesday in an interview with CBS Sports.
“You don’t think I can win?” he asked the reporter. One of them responded that the former Iowa Hawkeyes superstar and the Indiana Fever’s No. 1 overall draft pick is widely considered to be the most remarkable women’s basketball player ever.
Cooper DeJean, who was a three-time letter winner at point guard, added, “She’d definitely score on me, for sure, but I think I could pull it off,” DeJean said that Clark’s shooting prowess would be his biggest challenge. “It would be close, though. … She can shoot from anywhere, I think.”

Cooper DeJean is not just speaking out of his behind as his 2021 recruiting profile says he averaged 21.5 points per game at Battle Creek-Ida Grove High School, so he could easily give Caitlin Clark a run for her many. DeJean scored 1,832 points during high school basketball and is the state’s all-time steals leader, via NCSASports.com.
The 21-year-old from Odebolt, Iowa, wrapped up his collegiate career holding the program’s single-season record in picks returned for scores, making it to the end zone three times in 2022. He also registered 41 total tackles, seven pass defenses, and two interceptions in his final season with the Hawkeyes.
The Iowa Hawkeyes’ star defensive back is slated to go in the first round of the NFL Draft.
