NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The stars of the 2023 film ‘The Color Purple’ made an appearance on ‘The View’ on December 13 to discuss their upcoming film and honor co-host Whoopi Goldberg for her outstanding work in the original 1985 film.

Goldberg and her co-hosts Sara Haines and Sonny Hostin were joined by the new cast members Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P Henson, and Danielle Brooks along with director Blitz Bazawule on the Hot Topics Table.

The film, which is set to be released on Christmas day, is a reinterpretation of the classic Alice Walker novel, and was previously adapted for the big screen by Steven Spielberg almost four decades ago, reported Entertainment Weekly.

The role of Celie Harris-Johnson in the film had notably earned Goldberg her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, before she finally went on to win the Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 1990 film ‘Ghost’.

Speaking about his inspiration to have a fresh take on the story, Bazawule told Goldberg, “‘The Color Purple’ is sacred ground. You don’t just show up to it with nothing to offer or nothing to contribute … It’s been a brilliant, Pulitzer Prize-winning book, it’s an incredible cinematic classic, and we owe you.”

He turned to Henson, who joined him to urge the audience and cohosts Haines and Hostin, to stand and applaud Goldberg’s work as the lead in the first film.

“We wouldn’t be here without you,” Brooks told Goldberg while resuming to take the seat.

Steven Spielberg returns as a producer in the new film

Spielberg’s version of ‘The Color Purple’ was nominated for Best Picture at the 1986 Oscars.

Oprah Winfrey, who played the role of Sofia in the original, also rejoined the new crew as a producer.

The story is set in the early 1900s American south and revolves around two young sisters, Celie and Nettie, who attempt to reconnect for years after being torn apart by the former’s abusive husband.

The new cast of the film also includes stars such as Colman Domingo, H.E.R., Ciara, Corey Hawkins, Jon Batiste, David Alan Grier, and Aunjanue Ellis.
