“It’s dedicated to anyone who’s found themselves on a scary path not of their choosing or dealing with loss,” Goldberg said.

Oscar-winning Ghost actress, The View moderator, and pop culture icon Whoopi Goldberg will release a new memoir inspired by the lives of her late mother and brother as well as the “scary path” of grief she endured after losing them.

“This book is dedicated to my mother and my brother and our time together as a small, funny little unit,” the 68-year-old said of the book, titled Bits & Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me, in a statement to PEOPLE. “It’s dedicated to anyone who’s found themselves on a scary path not of their choosing or dealing with loss.”

In addition to reflecting on her life and career, the book also serves as a “semi-autobiographical” chronicle of her life growing up in the Chelsea district of New York City, where she and her brother, Clyde Johnson, were raised by their mother, Emma Harris.

Goldberg has often paid tribute to both Johnson, who died in 2015, and Harris, who died in 2010, including in a December 2023 segment on The View, where she reflected on taking Harris to Disneyland prior to her death.

PEOPLE also noted that Goldberg will focus on an incident where Harris returned home from a hospitalization with no memory of her children — “the exact moment the trajectory of Goldberg’s life changed,” the outlet reported.

“This book is dedicated to everyone who is just trying to figure out the small stuff as well as the stuff where you have to be more than you thought you could be and it’s dedicated to love,” Goldberg’s statement added.

News of Goldberg’s memoir comes one day after the Hollywood superstar got emotional on The View after she offered powerful advice on how to deal with personal loss to Israel Owens. Israel’s mother Ajike Owens was shot in June 2023 amid a confrontation that reportedly stemmed from a white neighbor who allegedly threw an object at a Black child.

“I think you get comfortable with it. You don’t need to get over anything,” Goldberg told the 10-year-old Florida boy. “You know what it does? It evolves. It doesn’t ever quite go away. You learn to move with it, and this idea that you’re sitting there chewing bubblegum and blowing bubbles and crying at the same time. This still happens to me. So we all will find ourselves, and you will find yourself in this. It’s not always easy, and it’s not always fun, but you’re not alone.”

Bits & Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me is set to be published on May 7, 2024. See the book’s cover above.
