Whoopi Goldberg is gearing up to don her habit once again, but wants her fellow “sister” there with her.

Sister Act is a well-known 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, and Harvey Keitel, to name a few. The film was incredibly successful, being nominated for many awards and winning a good portion of them, including two Golden Globe Nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The film spawn a sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, with much of the original cast reprising their roles and the addition of legendary female rapper Lauryn Hill and veteran actress Jennifer Love Hewitt.

The second film was not as successful as the first one, only being nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance, and has a low approval rating on review websites. Now almost 30 years since the second film was made, it seems that fans may finally get the long-anticipated third movie they have been waiting for.

Sister Act Is One Of Whoopi’s Most Well Known Films

Whoopi Goldberg had been acting for some time now before Sister Act was made, and was already a well-known figure in Hollywood. Prior to Sister Act, fans of her may know her from a little movie called Ghost, where she starred alongside Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore as the character Oda Mae Brown.

The film follows Whoopi’s character Deloris, a nightclub singer that is forced to hide from the mob in a convent. During her time there, Deloris takes charge of the convent choir, essentially turning them into a more soulful version of what they once were.

As mentioned before, the film also features quite an impressive cast list with well-known names like Kathy Najimy as Sister Mary Patrick, Wendy Makkena as Sister Mary Robert, Mary Wickes as Sister Mary Lazarus, and Maggie Smith as Mother Superior.

Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, while not as successful, still boasted the same impressive cast with the addition of Sheryl Lee Ralph as Florence Watson, Lauryn Hill as Rita Watson, and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Margaret, and follows Deloris as she tries to teach music to a group of students at the church’s school.

Oddly enough, Whoopi Goldberg wasn’t even meant to play the lead in the film, as it was originally written for Bette Midler, who has to drop out of the film. Sources say that Whoopi herself wasn’t expecting the film to do well, and was shocked when it performed as well as it did at the box office.

Whoopi Goldberg Wants Maggie Smith On Board For The Third Film

According to Yahoo! Entertainment, Whoopi really wants Maggie Smith in on the third Sister Act movie, even pleading out to Smith during a public appearance on Loose Women.

Goldberg said “One of the things that I want to make sure I do while I’m here is…I want to let Maggie Smith know that I’m holding the part of Mother Superior for you.”

She goes on to say “Because I just can’t do it with anybody but you. So if you need me to come over here and shoot it and do whatever we have to do, we will do whatever you want us to do, but we don’t want to do it without you, Maggie.”

Even at her older age, Maggie Smith has continued to appear in film productions, so it would not be too much of a stretch to have her on board if she chose to return as Mother Superior for Sister Act 3.

Maggie Smith is also a legend in her own right, with many acting credits under her belt. She may be known for her role in the Harry Potter movies among a younger crowd but has several other iconic roles that show her acting prowess under her belt.

Is There Going To Be A Sister Act 3?

The third film in the Sister Act franchise was announced in late 2020 and is set to be available on Disney +, with confirmation that Whoopi will be reprising her role from the first two films, something she thought “no one wanted to see.”

The film is set to be produced by Tyler Perry, something some fans already have thoughts about, but Whoopi Goldberg seems to be happy having him on board. Tim Federle is set to direct the movie, with writer Madhuri Shekar on board as well.

Whoopi will also be producing the film alongside Tyler Perry with the additional help of Tom Leonardis. So far, it seems that actress Kathy Najimy may be on board to reprise her role, saying “I like that. No hair, no makeup, no spanks…comfortable shoes. It’s a win-win for me.”

And it seems that Keke Palmer wants in on the Sister Act action, directly asking Whoopi for a role in the film by saying “Whoopi, I gotta shoot my shot….I heard that Tyler Perry is doing Sister Act 3, and I just want you to know that I’m available for the job – any job.”

Whoopi seemed to like the idea and was already one step ahead of Palmer, telling her “I already brought it up, C’mon Keke.” While there isn’t too much more known about the film, it seems to be building up quite some hype behind it while the kinks are being worked out.
