The Voice Coach shared a sweet message about his inspirational mother.

As a Coach on The Voice, Chance the Rapper guides and inspires the next generation of singers. But who inspired him to pursue his dreams growing up? It was his mother, Lisa, who achieved her own career milestones before Chance came along. The rapper reflected on his mom’s journey in a sweet Instagram post, uploading a picture that really shows off their family resemblance. Take a look below!

Chance the Rapper credits his mom, Lisa, for showing him how to achieve great things

The Coach posted a picture of himself and his mother in front of paintings of the singer Lauryn Hill. He also added a picture of himself with Hill and a clip from Hill’s concert, which he attended with his mom. In the caption, he explained the connection between Hill, his mother, and the special song she used to sing to him.

“In the 90s my mom owned Touches, an incredibly successful hair salon and barbershop on the South Side of Chicago…Her business fostered relationships, built marriages and friendships, and was a cornerstone of the community. There she met my father and eventually they got pregnant with me,” he wrote.

Continuing the family story, Chance added, “It was then that she was faced with the difficult decision of whether to begin on a new path of motherhood and family for herself or to continue in her purpose of her art and livelihood. My mama chose me…My mom sold the salon and spent all her time raising me and teaching me so many of the things i love about myself. She taught me so much about love and faith and kindness and most importantly music.”

What “To Zion” means to Chance the Rapper

“This Lauryn Hill album was our soundtrack, specifically ‘To Zion.’ And I still remember her singing me this song,” Chance wrote, adding the lyrics to one of Hill’s tracks:

Unsure of what the balance held
I touched my belly overwhelmed
By what I had been chosen to perform
But then an angel came one day
Told me to kneel down and pray
For unto me a man child would be born
Woe this crazy circumstance
I knew his life deserved a chance
But everybody told me to be smart
“Look at your career, “ they said
“Lauryn, baby, use your head”
But instead I chose to use my heart

Can we get a cover, Chance?
