In an Instagram post on Tuesday, the ‘Acid Rap’ rapper and his wife of five years announced they are going their separate ways, but social media has no chill.

It’s always interesting when two very public people announce in a very public way that they are breaking up, and then ask the public for “privacy and respect” during the whole ordeal.

On Tuesday, Chance the Rapper announced that he was separating from his wife of five years, influencer, entrepreneur and former model Kirsten Corley. As reported by USA Today, “After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways,” the couple announced in a joint statement. “We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together.

Stay Outta Black Businesses’ Business

To be fair, the couple has mostly kept the details surrounding their relationship and their family private, but that hasn’t stopped social media sleuths from digging for the truth.

A particularly pertinent moment resurfacing on social media has been a clip of Chance the Rapper enjoying himself—some might say a little too much—at last year’s Carnival celebration in Jamaica.

“Chance the Rapper and his Wife Kristen are getting divorced. Do you guys think it has anything to do with that video from the Jamaican carnival when he was enjoying himself?” wrote social media user @MarthaYaounde on X.

Now we aren’t one to comment on the nature of someone’s relationship, especially considering all the things we’ve learned in the last few years about entanglements. But the video speaks for itself — or does it?

After all, when the video was originally making its rounds last year, the public mostly pooh-poohed the criticism around the video being “inappropriate” for a married man and said Chance was simply having fun on vacation.

But now, with the announcement of his divorce, things look … different.

Chance and Kristen reportedly began dating in 2013 and were married in 2019, People reported. They have two daughters together.
