IF YOU’VE EVER seen Maroon 5 perform live, whether that’s in person or during one of their many televised performances through the years, you’ve probably seen one thing in particular: Adam Levine with his shirt off. Performing during a rock and roll show is no easy business, and anyone who knows anything about live performing knows how draining it can be.

But Levine, 45, has a very specific way he eats before shows to make sure he’s looking and feeling his very best.

“Right before going on stage, I eat very little,” he tells Men’s Health in a new “Gym and Fridge” video. “Just, like, two or three hours before, because you don’t want to go out there with a full stomach. Right before, I always drink a ton of water, a ton of tea, and a little bit of protein—like, some turkey slices and some apple, which is a good energy burst.”

That’s just one part of the very detailed and intricate diet he keeps, which usually includes a bigger dinner—usually something the location of the show is best known for, like BBQ in Texas, for example—afterwards. But he doesn’t delve too far outside of his comfort zone, because he’s been doing his thing long enough to know what works and what doesn’t work. “If I get too adventurous when I’m touring, it’s just not cute on stage,” he says.

There’s also one food he needs with every show. “If there’s not apples, I freak out,” he says. “If there’s no apples, I lose my fucking shit.”

Things have a little more order when the vocalist and former The Voice coach is at home. He takes his coffee very seriously (“I don’t play around,” he says repeatedly), and has one of the biggest walk-in refridgerators that Men’s Health has ever seen. One food he always keeps around? Peppers. “Eating a pepper every day… that’s more Vitamin C than in an Orange. I mean, I think—I’m not a medical doctor. People tell me shit, and I believe them.”

Just because he eats well enough to keep that ripped on-stage energy and physique doesn’t mean he doesn’t have some favorite junk food orders, though. Levine is an In-N-Out stan, preferring his burgers to come “Animal Style,” which adds a secret mix of melted cheese, chopped grilled onions, and Thousand Island Dressing to the top of each burger.

But he’s got another In-N-Out hack he keeps in his back pocket too.

“The grilled cheeses from In-N-Out are really good, but that’s on the low. Only real motherfuckers know about the grilled cheese,” he says. “If you go in there and are like ‘Let me get a grilled cheese,’ that’s off-menu. They’ll respect you.”

Noted, Adam Levine. Noted.
