The BRIT Awards 2018 - Red Carpet Arrivals

Justin Timberlake is back on the Billboard charts this week with his latest album, Everything I Thought It Was. While his fans must be thrilled that the pop singer has returned, his comeback isn’t as impressive as some may have hoped. The full-length underperformed in many ways, and it’s now his first release to miss the top spot on one specific ranking.

Everything I Thought It Was launches at No. 2 on the Vinyl Albums chart, Billboard’s ranking of the bestselling titles on the format. It comes in behind only Kacey Musgraves’ Deeper Well, which brings the country singer-songwriter back to the summit.

As it starts in the runner-up rung, Everything I Thought It Was becomes Timberlake’s first title to hit the Vinyl Albums chart and fail to reach the top spot. All of his past projects that have found their way to this list have soared to No. 1, and he almost kept that streak going–but missed out on doing so by one very annoying space.

Timberlake has thus far accumulated three No. 1s on the Vinyl Albums chart. He first reached the highest rung on the tally in April 2013 when The 20/20 Experience debuted atop the list. Later that year, in October, he doubled his total number of winners with The 20/20 Experience (2 Of 2).

Half a decade later–and more than half a decade ago–Timberlake added to his growing number of No. 1s on the Vinyl Albums chart. Man of the Woods launched in first place on the sales-only ranking in 2018, giving the singer his third consecutive leader.

Timberlake’s total number of appearances on the Vinyl Albums chart doubles when including the music he released with NSYNC. The boy band has pushed four titles to the tally, but none of them have reached No. 1. In fact, not one of the studio efforts from the group has been able to break into the top 10 on that list.

Everything I Thought It Was is also new to a handful of other Billboard rankings that focus on albums, though it doesn’t hit No. 1 on any of them. The title starts at No. 2 on the Top Album Sales chart, which focuses on all types of purchases. The set debuts at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, the list of the most-consumed projects in the country. That’s a new low for Timberlake when looking only at his proper studio albums.
