With language-lessons from Team Dan + Shay partner Madison Curbelo, Kyle’s cleared for the Knockouts round.

Unlike his Spanish-fluent Team Dan + Shay counterpart Madison Curbelo, Kyle Schuesler is the first to admit that he hasn’t exactly mastered the language. “The last time I did Spanish was my freshman year of high school,” the 19-year-old California native confessed as he and Curbelo rehearsed their bilingual cover of “Lucky/Suerte” by Jason Mraz and Ximena Sariñana for a sensational Battles round duet this week on The Voice.

Proud to showcase her Puerto Rican heritage, Curbelo — who went from zero chairs to a full four-chair Coaches’ turn on her second visit to the show — had no trouble picking up on Kyle’s language lessons where he last left them dangling in the classroom. “I did Spanish I and then quit,” Schuesler explained. “But she’s been so nice in teaching me!”

It all paid off for the two Season 25 Artists, who blew the Coaches away with a sweet and lilting Battles round performance. Schuesler and Curbelo turned in a stellar English-Spanish crossover cover that thoroughly convinced all four Coaches that Kyle and Madison make for a terrific onstage pair.

“Well, y’all are just simply show-offs!” Coach Reba McEntire beamed, giving both Artists credit for effortlessly hurdling the language barrier with a well-honed instinct for showmanship. “Y’all did a great job — I absolutely loved it! Madison, your voice is incredible. I didn’t know what you were singing, but it touched my heart and that’s the main thing — and that’s what matters. And Kyle, I loved your tone. It just makes me feel good!”

Faced with the tough decision of which Artist to send to the Knockout round, Dan + Shay knew they had an almost impossible choice. “Kyle and Madison’s performance blew me away,” said Coach Dan Smyers. “There was just magic between them; there was chemistry!”

“For him to really step up like that to learn Spanish for this performance just shows how badly he wants it,” added Coach Shay Mooney, who got swept away by the Artists’ flair for capturing the song’s infectiously romantic spirit during rehearsals: “I feel like going and falling love with my wife again, right now!”

In the end, Dan + Shay found a way to keep both Kyle and Madison on their team, even as John Legend sat waiting in the wings to steal away whichever Artist didn’t make the final cut. After giving Schuesler the slight edge as their chosen Knockout-round Artist, Dan dashed Legend’s hopes by using the Team Dan + Shay Playoff Pass to override his attempt at scooping up Curbelo for Team Legend.

“Both of their talents are just off the charts,” said Smyers, totally gloating that both Kyle and Madison are still firmly entrenched with his team. “He sung Spanish, which was mind blowing to me — because if we tried, we would fail. We would fall flat on our face!”
