Novak Djokovic has sent shockwaves through the tennis circles with his major coaching shake-up. But the biggest question is: what is something that was required after 24-time Grand Slam titles after standing at the world number one position for such a long time at the age of 36? Where fitness and injury are still a question and tournaments are scheduled around the corner, Andy Roddick recently revealed whether this was the best decision on the Serb’s part.
While he has always looked to his team to find the remaining edge, he is now finally going to make a potential transition to dealing with young tennis players on the court. But let’s take a look at what another Grand Slam champion has to say about such a huge decision.
Andy Roddick answers a ‘weirdly framed question over Novak Djokovic’s coaching change
In one of the latest podcast episodes of Served with Andy Roddick, the 41-year-old former tennis player weighed his opinion on the world’s number one tennis player’s coaching prospects following his split with former coach Goran Ivanisevic. He stated, “It’s already weirdly framed question because, does he need a coach? Like I think my cat could coach him and do a pretty good job, probably win a bunch of matches.”
However, Andy Roddick shared his thoughts on who could fill the vacancy, but at the same time, he questioned whether Novak Djokovic actually needed a coaching change after winning 12 Grand Slam titles with the Croatian coach by his side. Subsequently, Roddick also talked about how he’s in such a position where tournaments are ready to go one after the other that he doesn’t have time to start everything again.
Andy Roddick added, “But, the thing is, he’s 36. It’s a weird moment where does he think he’s in there with these other three superhumans. I think that you would want someone, I don’t think you would do a trial run with no coach before Roland Garros and Wimbledon. If I’m Novak and won that many Slams, I would want something that’s consistent where I didn’t feel like I was getting to know someone.”
Since the 36-year-old tennis star has taken this huge step, everyone in the tennis world has shared their opinion on the same. Just a few days ago, even Jimmy Connors, another American tennis legend, shared a harsh reality over the split.
Jimmy Connors’ insights on Djokovic’s coaching shake-up
Just a few days ago, in one of the latest episodes of Advantage Connors, the 8-time Grand Slam champion, shared his opinion, bringing to light a harsh reality regarding how whenever everything goes wrong, it’s always the coach that takes up the blame, rather than the player who should give it a try and sort out the error between the two.
Connors stated, “Yeah, fresh set of eyes. Maybe. You know that? You know, always are important. But yeah, I think you know, sometimes shaking it up. But isn’t it funny? It’s always the coach’s fault. The time to get rid of the coach.” On the other hand, he also shared possible reasons behind the huge decisions regarding how sometimes people need a break or just to check things up and find a new outlook on things.
