REBA MCENTIRE CALLS SELF-CONFIDENCE ‘A SOURCE OF FREEDOM’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Country star Reba McEntire is revealing how she found her self-confidence and fought to “look like me.”

“It was a learning process of accepting me as I am, which didn’t happen until years later,” she said of her early years, explaining that she often felt insecure about her fair skin but eventually learned to embrace it. “Finally getting comfortable in my own skin was a revelation and a source of freedom.”

Once she entered the music industry, McEntire shared that she had to stand strong when it came to stylists who wanted her to change her look.

After getting put in a strapless gown for an award show, McEntire said she was “uncomfortable and self-conscious” and told her team, “OK, from now on, never anything like that again.”

She found courage by looking up to other music legends like Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton.

“They’re very strong and they know exactly what they want,” she said. “Those were my role models. Those were the women that I watched and learned and listened to and watched, learned from. They were my guide. They were my manual.”

She eventually gained the confidence to stand up for herself.

“It took me a while to gain that confidence to stand up to a professional stylist, hair and makeup person and say, ‘That’s not me. I don’t like that,’” she continued. “And they’d say, ‘Well, yeah, you just sit here and we’ll make sure you look just right.’ I said, ‘Well, make me look like me.’”

McEntire is currently serving as a coach on THE VOICE.

“Working with the contestants, hanging out with the coaches. I’ve had so much fun. And the crew is wonderful. I’ve gotten to meet so many people that I’ll never forget,” she told PEOPLE about her time on the show.

She’s also preparing to star in a new sitcom pilot, where she’ll star as “a woman who inherits her father’s restaurant with a half-sister she didn’t know about,” per Yahoo.

Movieguide® previously reported on the upcoming sitcom pilot:

Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman are reuniting for a new sitcom.

The pair previously starred in REBA together. Now, they are set to work alongside each other in a still-unnamed NBC pilot.

“The pilot follows Bobbie (McEntire) who inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had,” Deadline reported. “Peterman will portray Gabby, a bartender who has worked at the tavern for quite some time. She is a bit needy and dramatic and would have loved to be Bobbie’s sister.”
