The Voice stage can be an emotional place sometimes.
Artists Serenity Arce and Bri Fletcher were moved to tears on Monday’s night episode of The Voice as the two members of Team Chance went head-to-head during Season 25 Battles. Chance the Rapper decided to pair them up together because of their shared affinity for “emotional music,” the Coach said.
When fellow Coach John Legend asked what got the duo so emotional as the performance came to an end, Arce, a 16-year-old from Jupiter, Florida, explained, “It’s kind of a huge message for me. I’ve made a lot of friendships in this competition, especially Bri, and I think that I really channeled that in the song. At some point, people have to go and stay and it’s just a lot.”
“I love when I see Artists collaborating together, becoming friends. I even had Artists on my team who got married to each other from a few seasons ago,” Legend said, referring to Season 19 contestants John Holiday and Rio Souma. “I love that you all embrace the spirit of what this is. That was really beautiful, thank you for that.”
While in rehearsals, Coach Chance noted that “Serenity is an amazing talent at any age, but she’s 16 and just holding it down with such confidence. There are some lower octave parts in the song that she was ready to jump on. I think seeing stuff like that is always inspiring at whatever age you are, because it just reminds you that you gotta be ready, you have to be confident.”
Moving over to Bri, a 28-year-old from Fort Worth, Texas, he added: “I love [her] tone. She has this very soft, but powerful, angelic voice. She comes in very soft and understated and takes on these big runs or super-high register moments. In the Blinds, I liked her voice a lot, but I didn’t really sense the control that I saw here today. She’s here and making herself noticed. I thought it was awesome.”

Coaching duo Dan + Shay (Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney) were first up to offer feedback.
“Serenity, I feel like you were just a little bit more buried in the DNA of the song,” echoed Smyers. “But Bri, it was incredible. I feel like the work you’ve done since the Blind Auditions is night and day. I feel like you guys have formed a friendship here and that’s a really beautiful thing. Chance is gonna have his work cut out for him on this one.”
Coach Legend came next, complimenting Fletcher on the “power” and “range” in her voice before casting his vote in favor of Arce. “From the moment you started, there was this intangible thing that you do,” he said. “I found it very, very compelling. If I were to choose, I would pick Serenity.”
Coach Reba McEntire broke away from the pack to side with Fletcher: “Your voice is incredible, I really enjoyed listening to it. Your range was great, it’s powerful. Serenity, yours had a different tone and a soft and emotional texture to it. I think I would go with Bri, though.”
In the end, however, Chance decided to go with Arce. “It broke my heart to have to pick,” he confessed. “They’re two very distinct vocalists and Serenity’s just gonna continue to get better. I think she has a very angelic, but strong, voice and I can’t wait to see what she does in this competition.”
“I wish that I didn’t have to say bye to her because we’ve made such a great friendship and I think we both deserved it,” Arce concluded. “I’m so grateful that I’m still here.”
