John Legend Reveals the “Stunning, Insane” Blind Audition He Still Thinks About

The Voice Coach thinks about this standout performance all the time, and you’ll understand why after you watch it.

Even after witnessing so many incredible Blind Auditions on The Voice, there’s still one that stands out in the mind of Coach John Legend (Seasons 16-22, 24): “John Holiday from Texas [Season 19]. He was just stunning and he has this insane voice,” the “All of Me” told NBC Insider.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

With his strong falsetto and the fact that he chose to cover an Ella Fitzgerald song, all of the Coaches assumed that the singer they were hearing was female. “You don’t realize it’s a guy singing and, you know, it’s one of those moments that’s only happening on The Voice. You have this shock of I turn around, and who knew?” recalled Legend.

In Holiday’s Blind Audition, Legend was the first to turn their chair around, going all-in after basically the first note. When Kelly Clarkson realized she was listening to a man, though, she was visibly surprised. Later, Blake Shelton asked, “That’s who was singin?”

It’s a moment Legend will never forget. “There are a few Artists that have been like that over the years, but John sticks out to me. He’s just incredibly brilliant. He went to the Lives with me. He was my finalist for that season and he’s incredible,” he said.

After Clarkson got blocked, Legend and Gwen Stefani vied for Holiday’s allegiance, but John ended up choosing John, and vice versa.

There may be more shocking moments in store for Legend, as he’s coming back for The Voice‘s upcoming Season 24. In a promo for the season, Legend pokes a little fun at former Coach Shelton, who departed for the first time in the show’s history after Season 23. “Maybe someone can finally class up that chair,” Legend tells Reba McEntire, who’s filling Shelton’s cowboy boots this season.

Legend’s chair, meanwhile, was briefly stolen as well…by his wife, Chrissy Teigen. In a behind-the-scenes video, the model and cookbook author filmed herself pressing the big red button and calling out “next” while Legend tried to explain the rules of the show. Team Chrissy!
