Rihanna: From poor childhood to youngest self-made billionaire

Rihanna became the youngest self-made female billionaire in the US with a net worth of 1.4 billion USD, according to the Forbes list published on July 4. Her assets mainly come from her singing career and fashion and beauty product business.

Rihanna experienced poverty and discrimination during her childhood. The singer is the eldest of three sisters in Saint Michael, Barbados. Her childhood was dark when her father – Mr. Ronald Fenty – suffered from alcohol and drug addiction. “Fridays would be scary because he would come home drunk. Half of his salary was spent on alcohol,” she told Rolling Stone in 2011.

“My family was torn apart by his addiction,” she tearfully said on Oprah’s Next Chapter. Mr. Fenty bought drugs even when his family had no food. The house was full of drug paraphernalia and endless arguments between the parents. The singer also often witnessed his father abusing his mother. One time, she also became a victim because she wanted to stay on the beach for 10 more minutes. “He slapped me so hard. I ran home with fingerprints on my cheek. I couldn’t believe it,” she told Rolling Stone.

The deadlocked life caused Rihanna to separate herself from her friends and her grades plummeted. The singer also suffered from severe migraines, from the age of eight to 14. Doctors also couldn’t find the cause. Initially, they suspected Rihanna had a tumor but all test results were negative. Until her parents divorced, her headaches naturally disappeared.

After that, Rihanna’s mother had to work full-time to earn money, and the singer took care of the two children. “I had to grow up early, like a mother,” Rihanna told the Guardian.

Rihanna was also bullied because her father was a descendant of Redlegs – a term for poor, white residents of Barbados. On Allure in 2009, the singer said: “I was raised ‘very black’ but when I went to school, I was called white. I don’t understand why.” The singer fought back many times, even using his fists against his classmates. She joined the cadet team in Barbados – where singer Shontelle was her team’s training sergeant, to prove herself strong.

Rihanna believes that her past of being bullied helped her endure life in the spotlight – which is crueler and colder. “This shell has developed since my first day of school. It didn’t come after I became famous. I couldn’t exist, be famous without it,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.

Tình yêu âm nhạc, tài năng kinh doanh giúp Rihanna đổi đời, theo Rolling Stone. Thuở nhỏ, cô hát ở khắp nơi, trên bãi biển, tại các buổi họp mặt và cuộc thi sắc đẹp ở trung học – nơi cô giành chiến thắng với bài Hero của Mariah Carey. 15 tuổi, Rihanna thành lập nhóm nhạc ba thành viên với bạn cùng lớp, chuyên cover các bài hát của Destiny’s Child.

Một ngày, khi biết nhà sản xuất âm nhạc Evan Rogers có chuyến nghỉ dưỡng ở Barbados cùng vợ, cô tìm đến thử giọng. Không dừng lại ở đó, cô lấn sân kinh doanh với ba công ty Fenty Beauty, Fenty Skin và Savage X Fenty. Rihanna hiện có 30% cổ phần thương hiệu nội y Savage X Fenty – công ty dự tính IP) với giá 3 tỷ USD. Cô cũng sở hữu một nửa cổ phần Fenty Beauty, công ty có doanh thu 550 triệu USD trong năm 2020.

Trên The Sun năm 2011, ông Ronald Fenty cho biết con gái có máu kinh doanh từ bé. “Con bé từng bán đồ ở lề đường như tôi. Rihanna đặt một cái giá bán mũ, thắt lưng và khăn quàng cổ ở bên ngoài cửa hàng. Thi thoảng, con bé mua kẹo, bọc lại và mang đến trường bán cho bạn bè kiếm lời”, ông nói.

Trên New York Times, ca sĩ cho biết chưa từng lên kế hoạch để kiếm một gia tài lớn như vậy. Cô không ngừng làm việc và muốn giành tài sản của mình để giải quyết những vấn đề còn tồn đọng trong xã hội. “Tiền của tôi không dành cho tôi. Tôi luôn nghĩ đến việc giúp đỡ người khác”, cô nói.
