Prior to kick-off, a peculiar incident unfolded as Kelce and Mahomes clashed with Tucker. Kelce expressed displeasure with Tucker’s choice of a warm-up location, kicking away Tucker’s teed-up ball and tossing the rest of his practice balls aside.
Kelce promptly removed Tucker’s helmet from the field, ensuring that two-time MVP Mahomes could warm up properly. According to NFL reports, this unusual incident occurred before the official warm-up period, during which players are required to stay within their designated 45-yard line areas, with kickers being the sole exception.
Tucker’s presence in the end zone where Mahomes was practicing appeared to agitate the Kansas City Chiefs. Intriguingly, Tucker did not have a kickoff tee with him, possibly suggesting he was attempting extraordinary 110-yard field goals.
However, Tucker clarified that he was merely stretching and had no intentions of provoking Mahomes or Kelce. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he stated, “For those who don’t know, the way it works is each team’s kicker goes to the other team’s designated warm-up area on the field. For me, it’s usually 90 minutes before kickoff. I’ve been doing the exact same thing for 12 years, never really had a problem with anybody.”
It’s possible that Mahomes and Kelce were attempting to disrupt the Ravens on their home turf before a crucial game, a tactic that seemed to have some success, as Baltimore incurred five personal fouls during the AFC Championship.
The Chiefs are now gearing up to face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, a rematch of Super Bowl LIV, where Mahomes led Kansas City to a thrilling 31-20 victory. The highly anticipated match is scheduled for Sunday, February 11th.
