Throughout his entire NFL career, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been under the tutelage of head coach Andy Reid, who boasts a renowned coaching lineage in the league.

Now, Mahomes, at 28 years old, has unveiled his aspirations to transition from leading the Kansas City Chiefs offense to potentially becoming a head coach in the NFL. Influenced by his experience working alongside Chiefs coach Andy Reid, the two-time MVP is on the verge of completing his seventh professional season, all of which have been spent under Reid’s guidance.

Reid’s coaching pedigree is illustrious, with four current NFL head coaches, including Doug Pederson (Jacksonville Jaguars), John Harbaugh (Baltimore Ravens), Sean McDermott (Buffalo Bills), and Todd Bowles (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), having served as his assistants in the past. In total, 11 of Reid’s former assistants have ascended to head coaching roles across various teams in the league over the last two decades.

Reflecting on Reid’s coaching legacy during Super Bowl week, Mahomes expressed his desire to potentially follow a similar path, stating, “I would hope so (to one day become a good coach). I try to help out all the young guys that are around the organization – now I’ve kind of become the old guy even though I still feel young.”

He further elaborated, suggesting potential coaching prospects among his teammates, such as Jerick McKinnon and Blake Bell, who have demonstrated exceptional knowledge and dedication to the game.

Mahomes’ journey in the NFL has been marked by consistency under Reid’s guidance, along with exposure to various offensive coordinators who have later pursued head coaching opportunities elsewhere. Notably, Matt Nagy served as Mahomes’ offensive coordinator in his rookie year before departing for the Chicago Bears, while Eric Bieniemy, another former coordinator, may potentially return to the Chiefs after a stint with the Washington Commanders.
