The 49ers reportedly tried to bring Tom Brady out of the retirement during the off-season.

The San Francisco 49ers and their second-year quarterback Brock Purdy are currently preparing for their divisional round game against the Green Bay Packers, which is scheduled for this weekend. Ahead of the game, Purdy addressed the media, where he disclosed that Kyle Shanahan the Niners targeted the legendary quarterback Tom Brady in the off-season.

During a recent interview with ESPN, the 24-year-old quarterback Brock Purdy opened up about his mindset when his head coach Kyle Shanahan told him that they would look to rope in Tom Brady to be their starter over him. Purdy said he understood the Niners decision and was excited for the competition.

That meant so much to me. I remember him saying, if we can get Tom Brady, we're going to try to get him. And I was like, 'Yeah, he's the GOAT. I get it.'

However, the young quarterback was also upset and disturbed since he had played remarkably during his rookie year and proved that he belonged in the league.

Something deep down inside me was sort of like, 'Dude, I just showed you that I can play well in this system.
And we were one game away from the Super Bowl.' ... More than anything, I was like, 'OK, now let's go.

Purdy had a remarkable rookie campaign with the Niners as he registered 1,374 passing yards and 13 passing TDs in the 6 games he played. He also had a great completion percentage and fewer turnover issues. However, a shoulder injury during the NFC game led the Niners to lose their game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers tried to recruit Tom Brady

Following an underwhelming campaign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022, Tom Brady announced his retirement from the sport last February. However, later, the 49ers tried to recruit Brady to replace the injured Brock Purdy as their starting QB.

Purdy injured his arm during the NFC Championship game and was expected to miss several weeks of the 2023 regular season. So, they tried to convince Brady to come out of retirement and play on his childhood team.

Despite their efforts, they couldn’t rope in Tom Brady. Luckily, Purdy made a quick recovery from his injury and started in week 1 of the 2023 regular season. In his second year in the league, he registered 4,280 passing yards and 31 passing TDs while completing 69.4 % of his pass attempts.

And now, Purdy is looking to lead their team to a Super Bowl trip. First, the No.1 seeded Niners will look to defeat the Packers in their wildcard this weekend and advance to the conference championship game.
