Cowboys create $4 million in cap space by restructuring Dak Prescott’s contract amid underwhelming free agency moves

The Cowboys released veteran RB Tony Pollard in the offseason.

Amid the underperformance in the NFL Offseason, the Dallas Cowboys finally made a way to restructure the contract for their quarterback Dak Prescott. As per the new structure, Prescott was supposed to receive a whopping $59.5 million in the next 2024-25 season. However, as expected, Jerry Jones and Co. had made a restructuring to save some amount with the overall team in view.

As reported by ESPN journalist Field Yates, the Cowboys team decided to convert the $5 million roster bonus to the signing bonus. In addition, the team decided to add void years to Dak Prescott‘s contract.

As a result, the team will manage to save at least $4 million. Prescott’s new contract will be $55.4 million and the void years mean that the team will have the authority to carry him after the 2024 season even if wants to move out of Dallas.

As the Cowboys managed to make the deal with Prescott, it is expected that they will try to sign some big names in the remaining free agency. The pending contract of Prescott could have been a roadblock for them. Since that is solved, Jerry Jones can feel that his hands are free and he can go for some big players.

Though the majority of the free agents have already signed with some other teams, a few names are still available. The likes of Chase Young, cornerback Stephon Gilmore, wide receiver Mike Williams, and safety Justin Simmons are available and the team might go for them.

The Dallas Cowboys have a bit more than $4 million left in their cap space. It is to be seen whether they go for some big names in the coming time.

The Cowboys have a tough financial situation ahead of the season

The 2024 free agency has not gone well for the Dallas Cowboys. They let go of their two big names. It started with Tony Pollard, who left the club due to financial constraints. In addition, Tyron Smith also announced his departure from the team.

Despite the departures of the veterans of the team, the Cowboys did not sign big names in return. It was expected that the team would go for the likes of Derrick Henry. However, Jerry Jones never gave him a call. The team has made just one big signing in the entire offseason and that is Eric Kendricks.

Though an underwhelming offseason so far, the Cowboys are in this financial situation due to the contract extension of the present players. The extensions needed a hefty amount of money and, as a result they failed to have a great cap structure.
